CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Ford Escape has been in the news quite a bit and for all the wrong reasons. Within a few months of its release the SUV was recalled three times, twice because of engine fires.
In July 2012, due to a fuel line that could split and leak, Ford told owners to park their cars because even driving to the dealership for repairs was deemed too dangerous. Instead, in a somewhat unprecedented move, Ford sent tow trucks to pick up the affected vehicles and handed out rental cars while the owners waited for repairs.
A few months later the Escape was recalled again because antifreeze could leak out onto the engine due to a freeze plug becoming dislodged. As the coolant hit the hot engine there was, once again, a threat for fire.
The 2013 is the first model year of the Escape's 3rd generation and proves once again that you want to avoid the first model year when at all possible.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S
I HAVE BEEN REPORTING THIS MATTER FOR MONTHS NOW, MY ESCAPE HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE SHOP FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE IS A STRONG BURNING SMELL COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD THROUGH THE VENTS. IT IS SO STRONG THAT WHEN I PULL UP AND SOMEONE IS STANDING OUTSIDE THE TRUCK THEY ASKED: DO YOU KNOW THAT YOUR TRUCK IS BURNING
I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE MECHANIC SMELLED IT WHEN I PULLED UP AND TOLD ME TO POP THE HOOD BECAUSE OF THE SMELL. THEY KEPT MY TRUCK FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND TOLD ME TO COME PICK IT UP BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH, THAT I HAD TO TAKE IT BACK WHERE I PURCHASED IT. SO I MADE ARRANGEMENTS WITH THE DEALERSHIP AND I ASKED WOULD I BE GIVEN A RENTAL, THE ANSWER THAT I GOT WAS NO NOT UNTIL WE FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT.
I AM VERY AFRAID OF DRIVING THIS VEHICLE, BUT THIS IS MY DAILY TRANSPORTATION. I EVEN ASKED FOR THEM TO SWAP AND GOT NOTHING BECAUSE MY TRUCK DOESN'T VALUE ENOUGH TO TRADE. NOW I AM STUCK WITH THIS VEHICLE. PLEASE NOTE, THAT I FIRST TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT I PURCHASED IT FROM AND THEY DIDN'T FIX IT, I THEN TOOK IT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP THE SAME DAY AND THAT'S WHEN THE MECHANIC SMELLED IT. WELL, THEY KEPT IT AND AGAIN TOLD ME TO COME PICK IT UP B/C THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT.
I CALLED BACK TO CUSTOMER RELATIONS WHERE I HAVE CASES FILED ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS AND THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE IT BACK IF I CONTINUE TO HAVE PROBLEMS SO NOW I AM TRYING TO GET IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT AND THEY PUT ME OFF A WHOLE WEEK BEFORE THEY CAN LOOK AT IT. IT APPEARS THE SMELL IS FROM THE MOTOR AND DASH BOARD WITH IS COMING THROUGH THE VENTS. I HAVE HAD TO EXIT THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE IT WAS SMELLING LIKE IT WAS IN FLAMES. I AM VERY UPSET AND SCARED FOR MY SAFETY
