This is a known issue with this model. The dealership said that mine was manufactured 3 months after the cut off of the recall. This is ridiculous. The same thing is happening not only to mine, but many, many other vehicles yet nothing is being done about it.
I called the dealer, All American Ford in Hackensack NJ, they said this issue is not covered by a Recall because my VIN doesn't show on their list. But it can be covered by the extended warranty with a $100 deductible. The rep said that usually this can be repaired by reinstalling the software in the ECU.
According to the maintenance history online it requires the torque converter sensor replacement because this sends the electric input to the ECU, and since this is an intermittent problem it should be changed to avoid future incidents. But the steering column is an extensive repair and costly. So the dealer is going to try to slip out of it. But my wife almost had a collision and we do not want this to repeat.
When leaving in the morning from Toronto, the power steering failed and the TCS light was on. Turning the car on and off several times, as well as pushing the TCS button, did not remedy the problem. We ended up having to drive over 100 km with no power steering. When we took it into the dealer, the next day, the steering was fine and they didn't do anything other than say they would look into the problem to see if anyone else had this issue. (However; we never heard back).
