Cut the grass and went to get in the Escape to get the mail. Noticed some black on the ground behind the truck. realized it was glass and looked up to see my rear window was gone! It exploded right in the driveway. Nothing hit it, didn't open the gate or glass, etc. Had my bud from the glass shop come up Saturday and replace it with a new one. I have dealt with him for over 30 years. It was a beautiful looking brand new piece of glass. All professional installation as usual.

Sunday morning drove about 80 km and came home and parked. Did NOT open the gate or rear glass. JUST PARKED! Monday morning, sitting at computer, and then the dog started to bark like when someone is at the door or outside. didn't seem like anyone there. This was about 10am. At about 11 open the door to put some bottles in the recycling bin and notice my BRAND NEW rear window is shattered AGAIN. It was backed in so nothing could have hit it like a flying stone, etc. It was almost up to the garage so nothing could get behind it. It was not hot, just warm outside.

I don't understand this. I have had the vehicle a couple months, in hot and cold temps, driven in good and bad weather, and didn't even touch the gate or glass. NOW I get this a SECOND TIME in a matter of two days? Something not right! I see everywhere after looking on internet that this is a MAJOR problem. I though these were good vehicles and being a mechanic I have never heard any complaints like this before. WAKE UP FORD AND DO THE RIGHT THING!!!

Update from May 21, 2018: OK. NOW I am doing the elimination process. I was sitting out front with the rear window taped up. No wind to speak of....I watched the plastic blowing in and out. Now I am wondering about cabin pressure. The only things I have done different since owning this vehicle for a couple months are:::: I changed the cabin air filter a couple of weeks ago. I started using the A/C about a week ago. At that same time I changed my fan blower sensor so I would have all 4 speeds on my fan working. I have always used the tailgate or rear window and have had no problems. The old window did not have the rear defrost working. I repaired that. Now I wonder if the rear defrost stays on and heats up the window OR the cabin air filter has changed the pressure inside the vehicle causing different pressures ( this WOULD cause the rear window to be pressurized and burst..hmmm. wonder if this is EVERYONE'S problem) , or if the connecting pieces that are attached to the window for the shocks are the problem...not holding and letting go with a snap. I can't believe that many windows have a defect in them....although that is one of the first things my insurance agent mentioned could be the problem.

I had just unloaded my fishing gear to go fishing, and when I closed the rear hatch door, the window glass exploded sending pieces of glass everywhere. There was nothing of the window left. It was 80 degrees and cloudy when this happened. I intend to demand that the Ford dealer where I bought the car fix the window and provide me with a loaner or rental car all at no cost to me.

I am very upset because after loading my work bag into my 2009 Ford Escape the tailgate window shattered into a million pieces. I had to ride 40 miles in 22 degrees weather with no back window. After looking on the internet I see numerous complaints regarding this problem. Hoping to find a recall so I won't have to pay for this.

On Aug 13, 2011 the rear window on our 2009, Ford Escape shattered when the hatch door was closed. This is the second time this has happened. The first time was Nov 12, 2010. Fortunately, both times our car was sitting in our driveway.

The NHTSA is investigating the 2010 - 2011 Escape for this problem. We filed reports with the NHTSA for both occurrences. The NHTSA needs to be informed that this problem predates the 2010 Escape. It would be good, if everyone that has had their Escape rear window shatter file a NHTSA report.

The rear window blew up while the car was parked in shade of ventilated garage. It had not been driven for several days. I saw it explode. Fortunately no one was injured. Had I or my granddaughter been near it we could have been hurt. This was on July 1 after 6 pm so no one available due to holiday weekend to do repair. We had to cancel our 4th of July plans to travel south in state. But at least we weren't out on a trip and it was in sheltered area away from rain and bad weather. I hate to think of how serious this could be if the circumstances were different.....such as in process of opening rear hatch....I don't want to think about what this could do to a child. Glass shot out of and fell into the car. I used to think this was a great car and I would stick with Ford after two rough experiences with Chrysler vehicles but now I am afraid to get near the back of this thing. NO ONE wants a glass expelling bomb in their garage! The dealership from which we purchased has closed but we will be in touch with Ford. Our warranty is over and our insurance will cover after the $500 deductible but Ford needs to take responsibility for these faulty windows. There are many reports on line as far back as 2005 on these windows exploding and I am not pleased that they pose a risk still in 2009.

Wow! Sad to see so many other people with this same problem. Came out of the house this morning about 7:00, opened the hatch to stow my workout bag, closed the hatch and KABOOM! Scared the be-geezus out of me! The entire back window shattered into a million pieces. I was stunned! There have been MUCH colder mornings than this one ... not even below freezing this morning; just some frost on the windows. Immediatiately called our Ford dealer ... seemed fairly disinterested and told us to call back.

Talking now to the insurance glass company. More later.
