CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Escape has problems where the engine shuts down while driving. Ford finally issued a September 2014 recall. Time will tell if the recall fix really solves the problem.
However the 2005 Escape also has a defect where the PCM (Power Control Module) fries at around 100k miles. Ford extended the PCM warranty to 80,000 miles, but only after most owners were past the mileage limit. Now owners are on the hook for the average repair cost of over $2,000 (!!)
My 2005 Escape is lousy on fuel mileage. I make sure tires are properly inflated and every once in a while I run 89 octane for a little extra mileage. Now my Escape has oil leaks and check engine codes for fuel related issues. Never again will I own a Ford Escape.
I bought my 05 Escape in Nov 07 with a few miles over 26,000. Was explained to me fuel mileage would run around 20mpg. This vehicle is a monster on gas! I live in town and put approx 15 miles per day. My fuel mileage? 9mpg.
Ive taken it to Ford dealer with no positive results. All I'm told is 'the computer tells us you are getting 21.7 mpg". That is sooooooooooooo off base. The highest I've ever been able to get is 12. The dealer is definitely not interested in listening to me or in addressing my concerns. Am very frustrated!
