CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Escape has problems where the engine shuts down while driving. Ford finally issued a September 2014 recall. Time will tell if the recall fix really solves the problem.
However the 2005 Escape also has a defect where the PCM (Power Control Module) fries at around 100k miles. Ford extended the PCM warranty to 80,000 miles, but only after most owners were past the mileage limit. Now owners are on the hook for the average repair cost of over $2,000 (!!)
Same problem as Geoff from AZ. I'm about to get rid of it because numerous mechanics run it through the Computer and it comes back "o.k." Yeah right. Drive any further than 15-20 miles and it dies as soon as you reduce mph coming down the offramp of the freeway. Not exactly safe in L.A. Very disappointed that the Ford Dealer's best was "not sure but it could be the fuel pump".... (Doubtful) I have a feeling we have what is popularly called a "lemon". Thanks Ford!!
i have a 2005 escape that keeps stalling when it comes to a stop, it feels like i forgot about the clutch but its an auto. i have to put it in neutral & drop into drive to take off from a stop. it runs fine in neutral & park, but will stall in immediately when put in gear. i have had it in the shop twice and it never stalled on them (of course). if you have any advice i could really use it, i am at the end of my rope
Stopped at a light, accelerated to make a turn and the car dies. Restarted it and put it in gear and it dies again. Repeated the step two more times. Had it towed and they said it my torque converter... 800.00 and 1 week later i now have my car back. Guess we will see if that was it or not!
