CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Escape has problems where the engine shuts down while driving. Ford finally issued a September 2014 recall. Time will tell if the recall fix really solves the problem.

However the 2005 Escape also has a defect where the PCM (Power Control Module) fries at around 100k miles. Ford extended the PCM warranty to 80,000 miles, but only after most owners were past the mileage limit. Now owners are on the hook for the average repair cost of over $2,000 (!!)

I have a 2005 Ford Escape....good for a while then nothing but problems. First the back window blew out when I turned on the defrost. Then theft light, check engine light would come on and off along with chugging and problems going over 80. Then wouldn't go in reverse. Then after filling it with fuel it would act funny including very noisy...engine cutting off completely when driving. No one apparently knows how to fix this problem. I've been milked big time by Canadian Tire until they finally admitted they didn't know how to fix it. Now being told I need new coils, plugs and a computer. That's not including the possible transmission problem....and any of the other numerous damage that the ford computer/car set up is having on the rest of the car. It started as an electrical issue and is continuing. We need to set up a petition and get this on the recall list. Ford needs to pay us back for all of the bs or fix it.

Our 2005 escape lost all power while going 75 on a major highway in NC (we were headed from PA to GA for a wedding). After we paid for all of the sparks plugs and 2 coils to be replaced, we were told that the entire computer system was also blown. The Ford company was on backorder for the computer. We were told that they only make one a day. We were at this mechanic from 1145-1745. They then told us is would take at least a week to get the computer. We then had to rent a car, continue driving to GA, then back to PA two days later with the rental car. We still have the rental car, which we have to drive 6 hours to return to NC when our car is finished!!! I want Ford to pay! They know this is an issue!

My 2005 Ford Escape was running like S**t. Was making plans to have a tune up. I go out to start the car and nothing happens. My brother thought it was the battery but the battery would not charge. Got a new battery and still no go. Had it towed to local mechanic who later informs me that it is the PCM module and he cannot repair it and that I will need to have it towed to the local Ford dealership because the new PCM module will need to be programed by Ford. I called the local dealership to inquire about the cost to repair PCM module and was told it could be anywhere from $65.00 to $2,000.00. Don't have the money for that! Is there a class action lawsuit regarding this problem? Thanks, dcjunebug

My 2005 Escape was running rough so I pulled over and called a tow truck. My mechanic could not diagnose the problem so it had to be towed to a Ford Dealer in Grimsby Ontario. Computer is blown but what made this worst is no parts available in Canada or the USA. Contacted Ford Canada in Oakville to find out 'no Warranty' or recall. I had the computer taken out of the truck and shipped to USA for rework and return. The computer has just been received, took over a month and has been installed. To my surprise, apparently when the computer was shutting down in the Escape it did further damage to the truck. The 3 Catalytic Converters were blown and have to be replaced.Each for a price of 1300.00 each. I feel completely ripped off here and have not received a total bill yet. Isn't there something we can do?

I first noticed my Escape seemed to be running rough. I thought it might have a dirty injector. After several bottles of injector cleaner, it went to my mechanic. He told me it had a bad PCM. We have searched everywhere for a used one, even in Canada. None to be found. Even the places that rebuild these units can't get parts for this PCM. I am not willing to buy a new part yet. But I have a lawyer looking into a class action suit against Ford. Especially after learning I am not alone with this problem. I also learned that shortly after my Escape was built the model # PCM was changed. So, Ford knew they had a problem and quietly changed it.

While driving down the road, the vehicle suddenly sputters then dies, after we manage to cross 3 lanes of traffic and call a tow truck; rental company, and a Taxi. I get a call from the transmission place where I had the car towed, only to discover it was not the torque converter or transmission as I thought but rather 3 of my plugs are bad.. Guy at the shop tells me there is a known TSB for this issue, and tells me if I'm lucky this will fix it, however; he had the same issue with another 2005 escape last week and it ended up being the PCM. He replaces 6 plugs and coils "recommended by the FORD TSB" and no joy, the computer has a driver failure and it will need a new computer, ford cost over 900. I tried looking on line for two days for a replacement computer to no avail and had them finally order one from Ford. Get the car back now we've been driving it 2 weeks and the check engine light comes on, only to find that is now getting an o2 failure in the catalytic converter. Which he tells me is probably due to incomplete firing from the bad coils "back to the FORD TSB". Yes I'm with the others on the class action lawsuit and I'm currently looking for law firms that would pick this up. I'll be registering fordescapesuck.com soon to allow people to sound off on this issue and request to be part of the Class action lawsuit. FORD needs to fix this since its a known issue.

Me and my wife were on our vacation going through Toronto at 6:00 am in 4 lanes of traffic when my 05 Escape engine decided to cut out on us! Luckily i was able to get it pulled over to the shoulder safely and did i mention that it is winter. Anyways we started calling tow trucks, no answers at about 7 different companies so we had to call the police for help (approx 40 min later) we were freezing tow truck showed up towed us 13 kms to a Canadian tire garage and f*#cked me with my pants on for 190.00 dollars! Then the Canadian tire got there, turns at me for 263.00 dollars for a new battery and still the same problem! The mechanic told me he doesn't know how to fix it bring it and to bring it to a Ford dealership, since they may know where to to look .

So another 80.00 dollars for another tow truck to bring it to a Ford dealership. The mechanic took 10 minutes to find the problem. Obviously they have seen this problem before -- I need 6 plugs,6 coil packs,new wire harness and new pcm looking at 3500.00 dollars on top of other money mentioned.

I went online to see if there was any other poor fools that own a 05 escape low and behold i found about 10 in my first search. So i called Ford Canada to let them know about all the expensive bullshit we went through and see if there were any recalls for this problem and naturally there was nothing they could do to help us . So i told them that i work for a sign company and I am going to make it known to the public that the 05 escapes are dangerous to drive and unreliable with signs attached to our ford escape.

wife loves car,but it would of been nice to know about bad spark plugs before having problem and $1300 later,great for the internet,it helped me out a lot.Car died 1 mile from home,engine light came on,ran like on 4 cylinders,got it home,put scanner on it,got multiple codes for coils and misfire.Changed all plugs and coils with Ford OEM parts $900,still ran like sh*t.Sent out PCM for repair for $300 instead of $900 for new.Got it back,3 weeks later, still didn't run,had to tow(AAA) to dealer to program PCM to get car to start.Ran great,they charged me $92 ,so far so good.Ford knew they had a problem with the spark plugs on the 05 and 06 escapes,they really disappointed me by not recalling for the plugs.If i would of known,i would of replaced them months or years ago,before i had this problem.If you have an 05 or06 Escape,you should change your plugs now,before having any problems,but i don't know if it will matter,but it wont hurt.Anyone having this problem,should replace all plugs and coils with Ford OEM parts.If still runs like sh*t,send PCM out for repair.I bought coils and plugs from dealer,and did it myself,it cost me $900,but you can save money by going on line to Rock Auto,and getting OEM parts for $500 for coils and plugs.I also used them for the repair of my PCM,you have to remove intake to replace back 3 coils and plugs,if you work on cars its not to bad,2hrs,removing PCM is 5 min,remember to disconnect battery.Good luck

Same as others complaints. Have had all six plugs replaced and they say that the trouble code "B1601" was cleared up. So here we are a year and a few months later and still same problem. Have had 3 grandchildren in car and start to cross intersection and car dies. Quickly we shift into neutral and start car and shift into drive and get across without anyone getting killed by FORD. I believe it is spelled with four letters for a reason, they can easily be changed to something else!! Not sure what to do now. Have appointment with Ford shop to try to figure it out. I think after reading all of your complaints I might cancel and perhaps just trade it in. Other than this the Escape is a nice suv. My husband was a professional mechanic for 10+ years, now in another industry. I grew up building/restoring cars with my Dad, so even though I am female and may appear that I don't know what I'm talking about to a mechanic (why do they think that automatically??) I'm no slouch.

When my SUV wouldn't start we got right to work and had a diagnosis in a very short time: no spark without explanation. We researched and discovered that this is apparently not uncommon for this vehicle...

We made arrangements to have our car towed to the local dealer. Working with the Service Advisor Terry was a NIGHTMARE but his manager took good care of us.

Diagnosis: six new coil packs and a new PCM as well as new spark plugs and an oil change due to fouled oil. There is a new Service Bulletin out as of September 2010 that supersedes the others mentioned on this board, and the coil packs and plugs have new part numbers. Interesting, we had read here that at one point that others couldn't even get coil packs as they had all been recalled! Apparently Ford has admitted that there IS a problem!!

While it took seven business days for them to get my SUV back to me, we were advised that Ford was covering the entire repair under their emissions warranty which is valid for 8 years/80k. Thank goodness, we were going to be pretty upset if we had to sink $2500 into a vehicle that only had 49k on it and was only 6 years old.

When we asked if we would have problems with this again (like others that have posted) the Service Manger Brad said that it appeared Ford had taken care of the problem with the new coil packs and plugs. He had personally never heard of a problem like this at the dealership, and the one that we have in Fargo, ND is rather large.

For the record - my family has a lot of Fords: 29 A, 40 Deluxe coupe, 51 Convertible, 66 'stang, 05 500, 02 F-150, 03 Expedition and this SUV. This is the first MAJOR problem we have ever had. If Ford wouldn't have taken care of it, it would've been our last Ford.

I took my car into Ford and they told me I needed to replace all of my spark plugs, so I had them do that. Then they told me my car was still misfiring and that I needed all 6 coils replaced, I told them to replace the back three because they were the only bad ones and to put the best 3 in front. They did this and then told me it was still misfiring and I had to replace my PCM ($1000 part!) For a grand total of about $2000.

I called into ford customer relations and received no help or information. I then called corporate and they too gave me no help or information. They said there is no recall, even though they have a bulletin out about the coils having problems. They said there was no program to assist with the costs at this time and to keep all my receipts in case one came up.

I personally think a class action lawsuit needs filed!

On or about 02/01/11 Wife and two son's driving to school and work.Computer and coil pack's fried going appx. 50 mph, no power steering, no power brakes. Lucky she was in a strait stretch and could cross over oncoming lane and coast to a dead stop. If it had been a mile before on curvy road,might be making funeral arrangements.Warranty is out. Ford has it classified as Emission's problem,not Safety issue.Have two case #'s for NHTS and FTC. I guess thirty or forty people will have to die before before the government will make Ford do something about it.Ford say's no warranty,sorry for your luck.About $900 for computer which you can only get from ford,and you still have to take it to a dealer for them to program it and after programming $ 75 per hour to chase down sensor's that new computer tell's them got fried .About $850 for six coil packs and $50 for new plugs.Very small warranty on new part's.Ford should change their name and could still keep the F__ __ K

i bought this vehicle 3 yrs ago spent over 3000.00 dollars onn it to get fixed have had to put 4 computers in vehicle did all the ford so called experts have said got it back after 6nmos and it wont go over 40 f*cking miles an hr they told me the computer is going out again what the f*ck now no one will work on it because they cant figure it out so im paying for a vehicle i ncant drive. it broke down the first time on my way home from having a kidney/pancreas tgransplant 200 miles from home any body have the same problem im about to park it on ford property and blowing it up ive always owned fords but not anymore i'll drive a gm

Car would not start, let it sit a while and it started. Drove to auto repair shop at 15 miles and hour top speed. After an hour they told me I have a serious electrical problem and need to tow it to an electrical auto shop. First they tried to replace the the coils and spark plugs. The car ran better but the computer checked out to be half shot.

Anyway I have been waiting two week to get the parts, a new computer, coils, and spark plugs for $2048 plus car rental and towing. Ford should help with this since the escape only has 67,000 mile.

Please contact me if anybody hears of a class action suit. Also I have a 2007 ford fusion with the same motor and I am worried that the same thing may happen to it. This was the first two fords that I purchased and if ford does not help with the cost they will be the last two fords I buy.

05 Escape started with a misfire cyl.#5 Tried new plug and coil no fix. Next code came upbad coil cyl.#4. Traced problem to bad PCM. Called Ford dealer to order and took to dealer to have installed because they had to flash computer to vehicle. Went to pick up truck service advisory told me it still had a miss. Took back to mech. who diagnosed problem 5 mins. later. He checked out right away and it quit running 3 mins. later. Had towed back to Ford dealer to have checked out. They called and said PCM bad. Would not warranty. Said i need 6 new coils, 6 plugs, wiring harness, and new PCM. I asked how much$ 2100.00. I almost blew a gasket. Said they could not fix because wiring harness is on backorder until end of June. Thats almost 45 days with no Truck. Ford knows they have a problem and wont stand behind them. They lost me as a customer!!

As many have found, this issue is rampant among 05 and 06 Escape V6's. No indication of issue. Slight miss at high speed attributed to bad gas. No CEL. Started away from 4 way stop and "POP" engine died, and I coasted to the side of road. Got started again, but had extremely rough idle and no power. Fortunately I was only 1/4 mile from home and it was a downhill run. I was unaware of the TSB 09-2-6 associated with these issues. So I replaced plugs, 6 COP's, PCV, and upper/lower intake gaskets. Cleaned AIC, MAF, checked CATS for blockage, O2 sensors for damage (burning or CAT debris), removed every piece of the exhaust system from the flex pipe back looking for debris from CATS (none there). Compression check was within 5lbs in all 6 cylinders. $560 in parts later, I re assembled, and still lousy idle and no power. Took to trusted shop, and diagnosis points to ECM failure. From the wiring harness forward there are no "opens" in wires to COP's. Cylinders 1,3, and 4 are not getting triggers to fire. Codes to match.

I am completely baffled that Ford would know about the issue and turn their heads. TSB 09-2-6 is evidence enough they new there was clearly an issue with the factory installed spark plugs causing RFI damage to the COP's and subsequently the ECM. It appears they were betting that most vehicles would have issues outside the 80,000 mile Federal warranty. My local dealership has been great working to help figure out alternative issues without gouging my pocket book. I really think Ford Corporate should step up to the plate here and do whats right! The mere fact that the average Escape owner has to shell out $1600 - $2200 for the repair should be frightening enough to motivate Ford realize the PR damage they stand to endure. Until this is resolved, this will be my last Ford vehicle. BTW this is my 4th Ford.
