CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Escape has problems where the engine shuts down while driving. Ford finally issued a September 2014 recall. Time will tell if the recall fix really solves the problem.

However the 2005 Escape also has a defect where the PCM (Power Control Module) fries at around 100k miles. Ford extended the PCM warranty to 80,000 miles, but only after most owners were past the mileage limit. Now owners are on the hook for the average repair cost of over $2,000 (!!)

Went on a spring break trip to Arizona. Left the escape in a parking lot for a week. Had a great trip and came back expecting to go home and relax. Got in the car and drove 3/4 of a mile down the road. Stopped for a traffic light. Light went green and got on the accelerator to get going and the engine just held and revved while in drive, all of a sudden i heard a noise that resembled a large frying pan hitting the ground and the vehicle started to move. Got out and looked underneath it, and nothing there. Started driving and it sounded like someone was wailing on the side of the block with a ball peen hammer. Pulled into a parking lot and checked everything over and nothing was obviously broken. Went back to the hotel that we left it at while on vacation and got a room.

Took it to the Ford dealer the next morning and the mechanic diagnosed it with a broken transfer case. Had to leave the it in another state for repairs for a week and get a rental car to get home.
