CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Escape has problems where the engine shuts down while driving. Ford finally issued a September 2014 recall. Time will tell if the recall fix really solves the problem.
However the 2005 Escape also has a defect where the PCM (Power Control Module) fries at around 100k miles. Ford extended the PCM warranty to 80,000 miles, but only after most owners were past the mileage limit. Now owners are on the hook for the average repair cost of over $2,000 (!!)

About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Front driver's side anti-lock brake tone ring sensor snapped off of rotor/hub area causing ABS to falsely engage. Only 38,000 miles on vehicle. Lots of similiar entries on internet.
The contact stated vehicle surged forward while braking four times. The vehicle was taken to the dealership twice. They were unable to duplicate the problem. Therefore, nothing has been done to correct the problem. This happened at any particular speed.
I had a 2003 Ford Escape that was 2wd. I needed 4wds so we purchased a 2004 Escape XLT based on previous good experience. What has Ford done to this previously excellent vehicle? we have two major complaints, but NHTSA does not consider four attempts to repair ac that is leaking freon into the passenger compartment worthy of a complaint. So we will address complaint #2. vehicle brakes irradically, makes grinding noises, and brakes constantly hum. We thought this was due to being a 4WD, but after visiting your website find this to be a predominate problem on all 2005 Escapes.
When braking at a stop sign or a traffic light the brake pedal would constantly go to the floor. The vehicle is at the dealer, and the problem is still undetermined. A severe grinding noise is heard when the brakes are applied. The consumer stated that the brake pedal is getting soft when the brakes are applied....
