CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Escape has problems where the engine shuts down while driving. Ford finally issued a September 2014 recall. Time will tell if the recall fix really solves the problem.

However the 2005 Escape also has a defect where the PCM (Power Control Module) fries at around 100k miles. Ford extended the PCM warranty to 80,000 miles, but only after most owners were past the mileage limit. Now owners are on the hook for the average repair cost of over $2,000 (!!)

THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEIR CAR DEALERS SUCK. THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE WORST AMERICAN COMPANIES OUT THERE RIPPING-OFF AMERICANS HARD-EARNED MONEY. MY FAMILY HAS BEEN BUYING FORDS FOR YEARS BUT WHEN I BOUGHT MY 2005 FORD ESCAPE-LIMITED (USED WITH 29,000 MILES ON IT) RIGHT OFF THE SHOWROOM FLOOR, I PAID FOR AND GOT A LOT OF EXTRAS WITH IT. ONE OF THESE EXTRAS WAS A PAINT AND WAX SEALANT KIT THAT COST OVER $300.

WHEN THE PAINT STARTED TO PEEL OFF THE HOOD OF THE CAR, I RETURNED TO MALOUF FORD IN NO. BRUNSWICK, NJ AND SHOWED THEIR TECH THE HOOD. HE SAID DIRECTLY TO ME AND I QUOTE, "THIS IS A PROBLEM FROM THE FACTORY, THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED TO THE PAINT IF IT WASN'T DEFECTIVE. LET ME TALK TO MY BOSS AND SEE WHAT WE CAN DO".

WHEN HE CAME OUT, HE TOLD ME HIS BOSS SAID THAT THE WARRANTY IS EXPIRED AND WE COULD REPAINT IT FOR HIM BUT IT WILL BE AROUND 800 DOLLARS. WHEN I HEARD THIS I SAID THANKS FOR NOTHING AND LEFT. PROBLEM HAS ONLY GOTTEN WORSE SINCE THEN. I'VE TRIED TO REACH MARK FIELDS AND PHIL PERRY BOTH TOP-LEVEL EXECUTIVES WITH FORD BUT HAVE GOTTEN NO RESPONSE.

THANKS FOR STEALING MY MONEY FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND MALOUF FORD. YOU SUCK.

I am very disappointed with my Ford Escape, the brakes are bad, all three converters had to be replaced, the water bypass hose broke causing a blown head gasket and now the paint is falling off.

The paint on the vehicle’s back hatch was peeling off, exposing bare metal which started to rust. The paint on the bottom of the 4 door panels was bubbling and rusting. Clearly, it was a problem with paint adherence - the paint did not stick to the metal. The dealer's body shop manager inspect the vehicle and took pictures of the problems. As he inspected the car he repeated several times - “this is not normal at all”. The vehicle had less than 100K kms when I reported these problems and it even had an extended warranty. Ford was willing to pay 50% of the repair costs if I would pay the other 50%. The total cost was estimated at $4,000 so my cost would be $2,000 plus tax. Ford also said that to do the repairs they must replace the entire rear lift gate – hence the high cost - even though it is a problem with peeling paint and the rest of the door is fine. I cannot help but feel that Ford artificially inflated the repair costs in an effort to discourage me. After 3 months of effort, that tactic has succeeded; I took the vehicle to another body shop which did the repairs on the lift gate and the 4 doors for $1,100.

another victim of the Gold Ash curse. Bought 2005 Escape and has paint peeling off hatch near top, inside of fenders near engine. Also rusting on bottom of two doors and lift gate. I am not even bothering contacting Ford as its past warranty. I bought fords my whole life and traded in an 18 year old ford with no body rust/problems anywhere. Seems like Ford is skimping on paint jobs now.. Vehicle works great otherwise.

I was washing my SUV with a hose (not a pressurized hose) just a garden hose and the paint flaked off there was no rust or anything underneath, just primer and my extended "bumper to bumper" warranty only covers paint up to 60,000km. bcause ford is just that awesome.
