CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004 Ford Escape looks pretty good compared to other Ford Escape model years, but still has a trend of transmission problems, and engine problems from the NHTSA complaint data — so it's not a model year we can recommend.

Purchased vehicle in 2004, later that year had problem with the radio coming on and draining the battery. Took to dealer who under warranty replaced radio. In 2005 brought vehicle back to dealer with the same issue. This time they could not duplicate the problem and did nothing. In 2006 brought vehicle to dealer again with the same problem. Dealer diagnosed defective radio and offered to replace for $390 plus tax. Vehicle was no longer under warranty. Plus incurred $80 diagnostic fee. Declined the Ford radio and had an after market radio installed. Problem persists with radio still coming on with the ignition switch off. Brought vehicle to another mechanic who located a defective Fuse Panel Accessory Control Relay, replaced it and solved the problem. So much for the Certified Ford Technicians.
