CarComplaints.com Notes: A frustrating electrical issue is causing an ever-present “door ajar” warning light for 2011-2013 Ford Edge owners. Even with the doors latched shut, faulty sensors convince the vehicle’s computer they aren’t. With no way to override the system, owners have no choice but to stare at the warning light, listen to the warning chimes when the car is stopped, and deal with interior lights that won’t shut off.

I first noticed the problem when backing out of my garage. I braked while turning and the pedal did not go down. I almost hit my husbands truck before the pedal finally gave and the vehicle stopped. It has been doing it on and off since then. I put it in the shop and they said it needed new pads and rotors. Those were replaced last week with no change. Last night when leaving my work, I almost rolled out into traffic because the vehicle would not stop. My husband drove it this morning and said it seems to be a problem when you push the pedal more than once in a row; the first time it works and after it will not go down at all. I have checked and my vehicle is not one of the ones on recall for the booster but thinking that is the next step although from the complaints it looks like it may only be a temporary fix!

Warranty replaced brake booster and master cylinder 5 months ago. Still not fixed an couldn't drive. Then directly took to Ford dealership and they replaced brake hydraulic system for $1,000.that I had to pay plus rental car fee. Now 5 months later happening again! Not safe to drive it!! Can't keep doing this when I drive my small children. Will NEVER buy a Ford again! I'm seeing a lot of other posts with same issues. They should have a recall on this brake issue.

Very hard brakes, barely stops. According to other complaints, will take it in to replace brake booster. Doubt I want to keep this car long term due to repeated brake problems from other complainers.

This should be a recall!! It is very dangerous and it was not easily detected by my regular mechanic. I suddenly noticed my brakes would get really hard to press and then would finally stop and get squishy. Since I'm the one who drives it daily It was significant and scary enough that I finally wouldn't drive it. I have a steep driveway and one day was unable to stop it from rolling backwards and ran over the plants along the driveway.

I went online to see if there were others experiencing the same issue. Fortunately, there were others who reported it! Had I not checked with the Ford dealership in town, I would have had to spend $600-$800 to have it repaired. It was scary and dangerous and totally ridiculous that it isn't on a recall. I called a friend in NJ who has a newer model than me and she'd already had her booster replaced at her own expense since she was unaware that it was likely covered by an extended warranty. Ford must know it's an issue or they wouldn't have an extended warranty!

I bought this vehicle since I was retiring and wanted something more dependable than my old Explorer. However, I am seriously considering trading this vehicle since I also had a engine problem with my old Explorer that I really loved. No more Fords for this driver! I see a lot of Ford Edges on the road and I'm telling everyone I have a chance to talk to! What can be done to make Ford make this a recall??

brake pedal gets hard as a rock. have to press really hard

This is really a dangerous situation. It is not safe to drive the vehicle without the brakes operating correctly. Before I knew it was the brake booster, the brake pedal would go all the way to the floor before the car would stop rolling. I had to spend over $500 on new brakes and bleeding my calipers to find out the real issue. Had it not been for the extended warranty I could not afford to fix the Brake Power Booster. I have been told by several mechanics that the part and labor would cost well over $600. I dont even understand how manufacturers get away with releasing vehicles to the public that have faulty parts and are not safe.

I was in the mountains and would have to go over a mountain pass to go to a ford dealer so I took it to a local shop and had it fixed. I could barely stop the car. It is under recall so I should get the money back but ford is refusing. They state it is a customer satisfaction recall and not a safety recall. I think it should be a safety recall as I could barely stop the car.

I took my car into dealership for the warranty repair on the brake booster that failed. They told me it was safe to drive until the parts came in. Not the case at all. The car would continue to roll when pushing on brake. Had booster repaired, left dealership and within 1/2 mile abs system failed and now they are saying it is not related. I had no other issues with my car until that point. As I pulled back into the dealership the smell of locked up brakes was incredible and to make it even worse dealership did not test drive it after they finished installing brake booster.

I have the same problem that someone else has already mentioned. The door ajar light came on, drained the battery, replaced the battery, now the light stays on and the darn thing won't lock unless you slam the door at least ten times. Now the brakes aren't working unless you push them to the floor. Can't believe I have to keep this safety hazard. No way I can sell it in this shape and we still owe a lot of money on it. We've owned it for ONE year. My brother works for Ford but I won't buy one again. Sure hope nothing happens to me or my young son especially now that winter is setting in and all of these problems become even more burdensome in cold weather.

Update from Dec 19, 2016: Logged into my ford and saw an extended warranty on the brake booster. This was what was wrong with my brakes. Took it to the dealer and now they are working again. Check on your extended warranty if you are having this issue! I was just getting ready to take it in to a mechanic when I checked myford. So glad I did. No charge to fix this one..

Going down an country road brakes would go to the floor panel and not stopping. Whistle blowing and alarm going off when brakes hit floor panel. Coming up on dangerous intersection, by stop sign and no brakes. Thank God their was no traffic coming. Or I would be dead..... No turn outs on these roads, gullies. 7 crosses up from where my brakes stopped working and where I could pull over about 1/2 mile if that scary.

And come too find out Ford new there was a problem since 2012. I carry precious cargo almost everyday. How dare they jepordize my grandchildren's lives....

Brake pedal has to be pressed extremely hard to stop the car. The car dies at stop lights and check engine light came on. One time low oil pressure warning came on. This is a dangerous situation especially that my wife drives this car and is not able to press hard enough on the pedal to stop it. This should be a recall. I have not bought an American car for the last twenty years and now I decided to give them another chance bad decision.

I have had NUMEROUS issues with my Ford Edge since I purchased it. The door latch would't connect so the interior light would stay on, had to replace the battery as a result. Had that problem fixed and it is starting to do it again. NOW the brakes are having issues. I go to stop and the pedal resists. The car won't stop and you have to push with all your might to get the brakes to engage. SO DANGEROUS!

2012 Ford Edge V6 AWD. Applied the brakes at an intersection and they were VERY mooshy and went to the floor. I was almost standing on them.... went through the intersection and almost got T-Boned by a tractor trailer. Thought I was going to die. All fluids fine but still a problem. Can pump them and get some stopping power. Sitting idle and applying the break, it will slowly go to the floor and seens to make a noise at the bottom like your releasing air from a balloon.

Ford has published a notice - 13N02 - Extended Warranty Coverage on Brake Booster, and from all the complaints that I've read on-line, replacing this Brake Booster fixes the problem..... though it seems Ford is very reluctant to admit or replace this defect.

THIS SHOULD BE A MANDATORY RECALL! DO PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THEY ADMIT THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM?!

This is just plain WRONG and I will post this information where ever I can to inform people of this issue. You should too.

DURING NORMAL DRIVING HITTING THE BRAKE, THE PEDAL FEELS VERY HARD AND THE VEHICLE DOESN'T WANT TO STOP. IT JUST KEEPS MOVING FORWARD. I HAVE TO PUSH REALLY HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO GET THE BRAKES TO CATCH AND STOP THE VEHICLE. I JUST BLED THE BRAKES AND I STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. WHEN I GO ON REVERSE ITS THE SAME PROBLEM AND WHEN FINALLY THE PEDAL GO TO THE FLOOR IT MAKES A SOUND LIKE A BOILING WATER ON A TEA POT. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT CAN CAUSE A FATAL ACCIDENT.

initial brake application unresponsive requires additional pedal effort to initiate a smooth stop. I drive numerous vehicles in a day, being a mechanic, this vehicle's brakes really annoy me. My professional opinion is that the master cylinder is hanging up, sticking! mentioned this to the service dept. at my local dealer and they did not detect the same condition. My other gripe is why do warranty periods differ greatly between the USA and Canada with Canadian Warranty ending at 60,000 km and USA ending 60,000/mi. They (USA consumer) clearly have the advantage to a longer warranty period. the equivalent to 100,000 km in Canada. We are being shafted out of 40,000 km in warranty duration, and the kicker is my vehicle is built in Ontario, Canada just two hours from my home. What gives!

I bought this used 2012 Ford Edge a month ago and at first I thought it was just the way the brake power assisted system would work on the Edge but then it got worse and for several days as I would back out of my driveway the car would not stop as I expected until after applying the brakes really hard. It start happening on stop and go traffic, at low speed mainly. The brake pedal would stiffen when getting to a hard stop and when the car would move again it takes a lot of pressure on the pedal to get it to stop again on the next few seconds.... Somehow at higher speeds the brake pedal seems fine, it is just at low speeds or after the car has gone to a complete stop.

Today it happened on heavy traffic highway, going at 20 mph, having to stop completely and when I tried to stop again I almost rear ended the guy in front. Not sure how many complaints are needed on such a safety issue for Ford to acknowledge the problem and make it a recall item.
