CarComplaints.com Notes: Say what you will about the styling of the Ford Edge, but the bottom line is owners seem to love this vehicle. That is, of course, except in the case of it's dangerous, worrisome and unexplained issues with random engine stalling.

Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.

Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

I bought my 2008 Ford Edge in 2014 knowing it had quite a bit of miles on it. During the test drive, I noticed nothing wrong with car mechanically (some cosmetic). After I drove it off the lot, about two weeks later I noticed the vehicle jerking when I would shift from park to reverse. This happened most of the time.

A few days later, I noticed that in addition to reverse, between 2nd and 3rd gear shift the vehicle would sputter and jerk violently. This would happen intermittently and lasted maybe 2-3 seconds with each occurrence. I called the dealership before the 30 day warranty expired, and they scheduled me an appointment by the end of the month. When I showed up for my appointment, they drove it around and said it needed a transmission flush and the range/speed sensor needed resetting. They wanted to charge me over $700 for the fix!

I told the manager that I had called before my warranty expired and they couldn't get me in until later, so he assumed it would be covered under warranty luckily. But after a few months, the problem came back. I took it to other mechanics, and they all tell me it's a transmission problem, or needs a flush (though I just had one), etc. Now, I'm taking it in again as it has the same problems with addition to jerking between 4th and 5th gears. I don't know about you, but this model doesn't seem so safe! #secondthoughts

Vehicle constantly clunks in reverse. Dealer can not find problem. Changed motor mounts and still hear noise

Update from Aug 14, 2016: Driving on the highway going around 45-50mph heard a loud bang car jumped and pulled to the left almost loosing control of vehicle. Sounds like transmission seized up . Unfortunately dealer mechanics can't find problem or error codes. This is the 3rd time this has happened to me . Now I want to sell the car.

The transmission on my 2008 edge just started slipping. When it catches, there is a loud clunk. When it's placed in reverse, there's also a clunking noise.

The local transmission shop says there are no computer codes but to pull it out, it'd cost $485.00 so he could see inside. The total cost to repair it could be from $2700-to $4400.00, depending what was damaged inside.

Transmission starts jerking on hills although now its even doing it on flat roads. Transmission is covered by the warranty but the dealer is too lazy to replace it and says its the spark plugs. Already took it in for service 3 times. 1st time they said they couldn't find anything and all they did was reprogram the computer for it. 2nd time they said they rebuilt the transmission but it still did it. 3rd time they said the replaced the spark plug coils. Already told them to replace the transmission but they don't want to. Also when shifting into reverse it starts revving a lot before it actually starts moving. Of course the dealer says that's a problem with the spark plugs.

My family and I were on our way home from a nice day out .We came to a red light and were at a stop, when the light turned green we went to accelerate to take off and there was NO POWER to move forward , the low tire pressure code came up on the dashboard as well as the wrench code and the air bag code.I also noticed the odometer did not work and the dash mileage went to only lines. THANK GOD no one hit us because we were making a left onto oncoming traffic with no acceleration to move forward and my 2 CHILDREN in the car.We finally made it home and shut the car off, when turning it back on we heard a loud clunk and terrible noise in the transmission, but all the codes had reset themselves. I see this happening a lot from reading the previous posts and also see that FORD HAS NO RECALL ON THIS ISSUE!!! This is a safety issue and someone "god forbid" is going to get hurt due to this issue.I am taking my car to the ford dealership along with all these comments and the U Tube Videos, not sure what good it will do but i will keep you posted. CAN WE SAY CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT :(

My Edge has been stalling where you press on gas and it just revs, it won't accelerate. All of the warning lights come on and the odometer goes blank. We took it to the dealer several times but they always say everything looks fine, we can't find the problem! It will automatically start working fine again once it has been sitting. This has happened several times, it may work fine for months but then, out of nowhere, it happens. again.. Anyone find anything about this? I've a

I've seen several others posting the same issue. Something is not right, this can lead to accidents!! Help

Update from Jul 7, 2014: Hello all, I have contacted Ford company concerning this. Please call them at 1800-392-3673!!! I made the complaint and they will look into this but we must all let Ford know by filing separate complaints to them... They also advised me to take it to Ford for service but I have already been to the dealer over 3 times with them telling me they can't duplicate the issue!! Please call to log your complaint so Ford can do something about this safety issue.

Three times at Cherroke Ford dealer for this problem. First, dealer service dept said nothing wrong, second time, charged me $150 for a diagnosis, still nothing wrong, paid another $195 to service trans and change fluid. Third time: Three months later, Edge clunked and wouldn't shift, dealer said needs new speed sensors (Ford has had service bulletins on this problem since 2007 !)

Bought extended warranty before any of this happened as mileage approached 90,000 K, from OMNISURE GROUPLLC in 2012 as precaution, contract still in effect. OMNISURE says NOT-COVERED, won't pay to repair.

BAD WARRANTY COMPANY, SAID SENSORS NOT A COVERED PART, NOT IN TRANSMISSION, BAD COMPANY TO DO BUSINESS WITH, IF I COULD SUE I WOULD.

REMEMBER: OMNISURE GROUP/UNITED AUTO PROTECTION, all the same band of crooks.

While driving at highway speed (50 -65MPH), foot off accelerator and car coasting startling loud bang from transmission and entire car jerks. Put foot back on accelerator and everything seems to be working. Does not do it all the time but at least once a week. The bang is loud and startling almost causing accident. Could not repeat issues for Ford service department and they did not detect any problem in transmission. The bang is so loud must doing damage to transmission.
