CarComplaints.com Notes: Say what you will about the styling of the Ford Edge, but the bottom line is owners seem to love this vehicle. That is, of course, except in the case of it's dangerous, worrisome and unexplained issues with random engine stalling.

Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.

Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

I bought this 2008 Edge without researching the heck out of it as I needed a vehicle and it was a single owner, low mileage option in 2016. Purchased from a dealer were it was originally purchased and serviced. Started getting burning oil smell. With research, I found out it could be PTU boiling out the oil thru the vent. I never had a spot in driveway. Did more research, and decided to try to change oil out myself as every - and I mean every Ford Dealership I spoke to said that the unit is unserviceable! Wow - if it lasts a lifetime - then maybe they should warranty it that way! Ha!

Anyways, up on ramps today and went to vac out the unit with a peristaltic pump - guess what? I could not get any fluid sucked out, not even an ounce. When I went to refill, it took all 12 ounces, meaning it's been running dry for who the heck knows how long. I suspect the seals are burnt up at this point and will check it again in a couple days to see if the gaskets or seals are shot.

I have had a bunch of Ford vehicles, two F150s, two Explorers and an Edge. I'm not very impressed on the design where the PTU is located, lack of cooling, and LACK of a drain plug. BTW, I hear non-American versions have drain plugs. I just dumped $1700 in front end, knuckles, struts, cv axles, calibers as the lovely magnesium chloride they use on the roads in CT pretty much likes to eat metal. This, with a set of tires, I thought I was in good shape for upcoming winter, but may be looking at another large bill to deal with a badly designed powertrain. Probably will swap it out rather than buying another used with unknown issues. Why hasn't an ambulance chasing lawyer not started a class action?

With only 70,000 miles the Transfer Case should not have to be replaced. Ford should recognize this as a defect and replace the units free. This is ridiculous and will keep me from ever buying another Ford product.

My 2008 Ford Edge has only about 75,000 miles on it and I am looking at a $2,000 bill to replace the PTU. The PTU has no serving requirements. This is not what I consider normal maintenance cost. Ford has a design problem and should come up with a replacement unit of better design and standby their product by replacing the PTU at no cost to consumers. Has anybody heard about anything from Ford to correct this problem.

Well, after the transmission problem, that was installed, the mechanic called me and said there was metal shavings in the transfer case and that would also require a replacement ! This vehicle only has 72K on it ! It's so clean. I just don't understand why there are so many things wrong. Again, thank God the dealer talked me into the extended warranty on a used vehicle. I've owned Nissan's, Honda's, Acura's and a older toyota truck and none of them ever gave me these problems ! Come on FOMOCO ! Why and why wasn't any of this covered as a recall ?

Upon getting an oil change the technician spotted a leak told me that the PTU seals needed to be replaced approximately $600, upon further inspection it (PTU) needs replacing @ at small cost of $2300.00! Being the second owner I call Ford with VIN to see if the vehicle had previous work on this issue, they to my surprise say yes 2 years ago. My rant is if Ford knows they had a design flaw with the 2007-2009 ford edge PTU, why should the customer be set back paying for a f@@) up that Ford engineering is responsible for!

Being that I'm pretty loyal to my dealership, they brought the PTU part price down for me making the repair $1800.00 very nice of the dealership to step up and help.

I just wish Ford Canada would step up and do the right thing, recall!

Google Ford Edge PTU and see for yourself how many unhappy edge owners are out there.
