CarComplaints.com Notes: Say what you will about the styling of the Ford Edge, but the bottom line is owners seem to love this vehicle. That is, of course, except in the case of it's dangerous, worrisome and unexplained issues with random engine stalling.

Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.

Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

The vehicle was in motion stopped at a stop light then proceeded to drive off or accelerate unable to move. Gave more gas no acceleration able to pull over to the side shoulder noticed the tool bar on dash. Turned the car off and waited 5 minutes then started the car and put into drive a loud thud was heard then the tool bar went away was able to accelerate drive the vehicle to dealer. During the drive car didn't respond well to acceleration but rpms increased but car didn't increase in speed. All of this occurred on a city street without turns

Transmission disengages at random while moving in traffic. Once it occurs, vehicle cannot be moved under it's own power. Engine runs, but transmissions slips. High potential for being stranded in traffic and struck. Has occurred at least 4 times. Was able to coast to side of road. Electronics in dash act up, including service wrench and no speedometer. Apparently a known issue by Ford (tsb 07-21-11). Lots of common complaints online involving 2007-2008 model Edges. Related to faulty sensors (aa5Z-7H103-B & aa5Z-7M101-B).

Driving at I275 to St petersburg, at 60mph the car made a loud noise from the engine and reduced gears abruptly, it felt like a hard braking from the engine, very hard. The RPM went skyrocket, the car lost power and wouldn't go over 45mph or it would do the same again. It looked like it was on a very low gear, as it was at 40mph doing almost 4000rpm... I stopped at a gas station, turned it of and let it sit for about 20 minutes. When I tried to go back rome, after 2 miles it did the same, it lost power. I drove back to the gas station and had it towed home.

My vehicle Ford Edge model 2008, lost control as well as speed when the wrench light came to the dashboard, immediately after the airbag light lit up, I had little or no engine power to engage gear to keep up with traffic speed. My speed dropped to 40 miles or less per hour. Very dangerous situation because at that moment the odometer lighting also went off. Driving on a highway at night no one drives below 40 miles per hour, made the situation pretty grave and dangerous. The problem comes from the power train faulty sensors near the transmission need to be replaced costing over $800,00, as for the airbag I haven't received a invoice yet.

For no particular reason my Edge decelerates to ten miles an hour while the tach reads 3rpms it has happened on all types of roads and in traffic also. The tranny fluid is always fine. No codes on dash either. I have my gas pedal to the floor and it will only creep at 10 mph. When it reengages it is a large hard jerk forward. One evening as I pulled into my own driveway it wouldn't move forward at all I shut it off waited restarted it and it was like nothing happened. It does studder a bit going uphill almost like it doesn't want to go then it does. For a while I thought it was things like bad gas dirt in a fuel line low fluids but it isn't this 2008S need a recall as many other Edge owners have the same issues. I have made an appt for the car at the dealer and I am not convinced they know the answer either. I received the recall for the gas tank, but I want one for this as I and many other Ford Edge owners have the same scary power train issues reported to you NHTSA please help us. I want a recall free repairs or a trade in with out being taken advantage of because of this problem thank you saylorsburg Pennsylvania.

First I was driving when my breaks started to feel like they were locking up. Come to find out it was the power break booster which cost me $504. Then 2 weeks later my car starts to do a putting feeling and come to find out 2 of the coils burnt up the power control module costing me $1058. A few months before this it was in the Ford dealership because of a leak on the fuel pump. Costing me $216. I am furious I have had to spend this in the last month. I just seen on the news that Ford has a recall on the power control module but it was not my year. I am simply asking if someone would please look into this so maybe I can get some of this money back to pay off the debt it caused me.

My radio has a short in the hardware. Factory installed radio and it will turn off and turn back on repetitively some days, not allowing me to utilize sync. Transmission has started kicking intermittently for the past month. While driving and slowing down.

Driving straight on freeway at 70 mph and the dash suddenly displays odo error. Wrench light, low tire pressure light, and air bag light come on. Speedometer shows 0 mph but tach still works. After I stop the car and try to take off again it has no pickup. Transmission seems to be stuck in 5th gear or overdrive. Tach goes up to 2500 RPM but vehicle barely moves. When I shift from park to drive or reverse the engine/transmission makes a horrible clunking noise that makes me think it will come out of the body. The only way I can get the car driveable again is to disconnect battery for a few minutes then reconnect. Everything resets and works but occurs again-sometimes a week later, sometimes a couple of months later.

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Edge. While stopped at a stop sign, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate without warning. The engine revved and the rpms increased. When the gear was shifted into the park position, the vehicle lunged forward. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

On approximately 7/6/2016, while in motion, traveling North on riverside drive -I-55 North, on the 2-lane overpass at I-55 & mclemore, 18 wheeler was to the right and I was behind another motorist in line and traveling about 70 mph with a line of vehicles behind, it was after work rush hour 4:45pm; when as I am driving the vehicle sputters, seemed to it lose power, decelerates in the middle of on going traffic. The engine light flashed and then stayed illuminated, I could not accelerate in order get off to the side of the highway and traffic was at a very fast flow. My sync system surged, A-C stopped blowing cold air, the vehicle started "missing" but the vehicle did not shut off. Took the vehicle to advance auto parts store and was told that I had a misfire in 3 of the ignition coils, bought replacement coils and had all 6 of them replaced. Start the vehicle and the engine light was cleared but came right back, the vehicle is still miss firing on the exact same coils this time along with the PCM. Out of hundreds of dollars at the moment and it looks like I will be out of $3000 to Ford for an issue that they know is faulty within the design of the computer. We've already paid $30,000 for the vehicle, why would Ford not recall and repair these issues if they are aware of it"??"

While driving on a city road the car would not move when given gas. Multiple lights went on the dash board. Very dangerous situation because the car literally just stopped accelerating while in motion. Mechanic diagnosed problem as a faulty output speed sensor in the transmission. This is an on going issue that many Ford Edge owners are experiencing but Ford is not acknowledging the problem. There should be a recall as this is a very dangerous issue. I should also be reimbursed by Ford for the repair.

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Edge. While driving approximately 70 mph, the instrument panel illuminated and the speedometer fluctuated down to zero. The contact maneuvered the vehicle to the side of the road and restarted it after ten minutes. The contact stated that an abnormal sound emitted from the transmission area after the vehicle was restarted. The vehicle was shifted into the drive position and operated normally. The failure recurred several times in the past year. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

In August 2015 my wife was driving the vehicle at 45 mph on a four lane road when the vehicle came to a sudden crawl approx.10 mph. This was on a city street.she could barely get off the road with limited power. She called me to come to the scene and we had to have the vehicle towed to our mechanic. At the time, the vehicle had 61,000 miles on it. The mechanic called and stated the problem code showed it was the output speed sensor (oss) and it would need to be replaced along with the fluid. Upon picking up the vehicle, it was repaired properly and was back to normal. It was repaired by a ase master mechanic. The delay in reporting this incident is two fold. Since the August 2015 incident, I have since discovered checking on-line there are numerous cases of the 2007 & 2008 Ford Edge doing this. Recently, I parked next to a lady loading her groceries in a 2008 Ford Edge. When I asked her how she liked her Edge, you guessed it, they were on a family trip when the oss went out on hers. She stated hers was fixed under warranty. My repair cost $370 which was a fair price. It is my personal opinion, Ford knows this is a major safety issue but the facts are enough people to not complain to NHTSA and this keeps from Ford having to announce a recall on the 2007 & 2008 Ford Edge.

My child and I were driving down a busy interstate, 1100 miles from home. The vehicle was set on cruise control at 70 mph. Without warning, the car jerked. We had items that fell into the floorboard. I looked at my gauges and noticed the cars speedometer had gone to zero. The car began to coast even though the cruise control was still on. There was a lot of traffic on the interstate coming behind us. As I pushed the gas petal, the car would not go. I stopped the vehicle and called a Ford dealer and they had it towed. The next day we were told that it was a "catastrophic internal failure in the transmission" also, that it blew out sensors ect.. I have written Ford Motor Company regarding this issue and they state that there are no warranties or field service actions being taken and they urged me to contact with the Ford dealer servicing the vehicle with any discount or issues. The Ford Edge has less than 100,000 miles, and I know I am not the only one this has happened to. This is a serious public safety hazard. It could have caused us to wreck or a truck to rear end us and should I have contacted the Ford dealer then? I believe and investigation should take place before someone does gets hurt or killed. Again, there was no warning before this happened. The car is requiring a complete transmission to the sum of $5,382. I will have the receipt as soon as it's repaired. I cannot explain a cause other than an internal failure, as the Ford service man quoted. The car has 96,000 miles. Thank you for your assistance. My Edge started slipping when placed in drive so I would turn it off and turn it on until the slipping stopped after I placed it in a gear. After checking for recalls I saw several other owners complain about the same issue. The odometer screed did similar check as others coming up with dashes and cycling and checking through processes. The car was recently driven and the same slipping happened but this time it caused internal damage to the transmission. Most of the complaints I've read are in the same mileage range.

The car jerks into gear in drive and reverse. When the car is still and pushing on the gas to begin to drive, the tachometer revs past 3 and the speedometer is baring moving and the car is not accelerating. It hard shifts into gear (drive and reverse) and at times won't shift into gear at all. No acceleration in the car and very difficult to drive as shifting into gears is hard and jerks the car.

In recent weeks, car at times seemed to slip slightly while shifting or there was a hard, lagging shift. While driving on highway, speedometer stopped working, info/trip readout on dash showed dashes instead of numbers. After a few minutes, multiple warning lights showed on dash, including passenger airbag light, a wrench icon, then the low tire pressure warning icon. Readout then changed to a tire pressure fault message. Pulled off the highway and after making a turn, car seemed under-powered/acceleration was compromised. Stopped at a service station, turned off the car, then restarted. After restarting, warning icons on dash disappeared. When car was shifted into reverse, car jerked violently and loud 'clunking' noise occurred. Shifting in and out of reverse, while the car was still stationary, jerking became even more pronounced and clunking noise became louder. Had the car towed to Ford dealer - after diagnosis, was told 2 sensors (the tss & oss) in the transmission were faulty and needed to be replaced. Additionally, was told fan module was also faulty, needed replacing. Approximately $1700 in repairs and was without the car for over a week. After researching issue online, came across many people experiencing the same exact problem in Ford Edges, almost always around the same mileage (approx. 77,800) and for various years. This should be a recall! to be honest, though the car is operating normally at the moment, I have little to no confidence that this sensor repair actually fixes the problem long term as some anecdotal research seems to show that others have experienced a return of the issue even after the sensor replacement. I believe this situation warrants investigation by NHTSA as Ford will deny/ignore the problem until forced to address it. Too many people have this same issue and not only is it costly, but could be very dangerous as well.

After driving for a while (roughly a few hours) the Edge does this hard jerk forward that feels like I'm practically being rear ended. It's like a hard pause, before it jerks forward. Then it gradually accelerates. Also, on a few occasions, while pulling out of a parking lot, the Edge did not want to accelerate though I was pressing on the gas. Mind you, I wasn't going fast because I had barely pulled out of the parking stall when this occurred. It barely accelerated then gradually came to a complete stop while in drive. This has also happened while I was exiting the freeway once. I initially thought my battery was the problem, but I had it replaced the following morning. I took it to the dealership and I was told nothing was wrong with it. This was the same response I got when I've taken it to Ford during the term of my warranty. I have noticed that if the "check engine light" isn't on, nor if you're not paid out of pocket, Ford does not recognize a problem. This problem is quite worrisome considering I'd hate to be stranded with my children in an intersection. I live in a very town (los angeles county) where traffic is steady and aggressive so knowing this problem can happen anytime is unsettling, especially because I have been rear ended once for not being able to proceed with traffic at a green light. 2008 Ford Edge, purchase in 2012

Turned on car and put it in reverse then drive when pulling out of parking lot, . transmission made a loud "clunk". pressed hard on gas but car would barely crawl. Speedometer stopped working rpms would increase dramatically, wrench, check engine, airbag, and tire pressure lights all came on. Continuing on city street problem remained. Car eventually gained enough speed that rpms went down, but the speedometer still did not work. The next day, the problem disappeared except check engine light remains on.
