CarComplaints.com Notes: Say what you will about the styling of the Ford Edge, but the bottom line is owners seem to love this vehicle. That is, of course, except in the case of it's dangerous, worrisome and unexplained issues with random engine stalling.

Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.

Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

Driving and out of no where, receive an error message that says "odo data error", the car holds the current speed but it's very apparent that something is off as the car is now making a humming/air pressure sound (speedometer & tachometer stops working at various speeds) when this happens the wrench, airbag, ABS, stability control indicator and engine light illuminate. Within 5 minutes new error appears (tire pressure monitor fault). Once you have pressed the brakes and come to a complete stop the car is extremely hesitant to accelerate even with the gas pedal pushed completely to the floor it doesn't gain power until it has rolled about 15-20 feet and at that point there is a extremely loud bang which makes you think the entire underbelly of the car has fallen out. At that point it regains speed again, but if you stop it does the same thing all over. Switching gears result in a loud bang and jerking action of the car with little to no acceleration power. Temporary remedy is to pull over turn car off wait a minute or two then restart the car. At that point when switching gears the bang and jerk happen again with the car slow to accelerate for a few seconds then it takes off like a race horse. Sometimes this remedies it while other times the same process is repeated multiple times within one trip. This has occurred on city streets and major expressways at speeds of 35 mph to 60 mph. First started experiencing the issue at about 170K miles and has been going on for over a year with no solutions from mechanics. If a mechanic with equipment/computers can't remedy a repair and seeing how there are numerous complaints of the same issue Ford should issue a recall to repair any components that could trigger the issue. This is pure negligence seeing that there are so many complaints. My opinion is it has something to do with the transmission and computer system.

Several times now, my car will not accelerate. This has happened while going 40, 60, 70mph on the hwy. I have had to instantly put hazards on and try to pull over which isn't always easy during rush hour traffic. When this happens, I pull off, and then my car lurches forward and shifts gears and then can accelerate. This has also happened when I have been at a complete stop, and tried to accelerate. When you cannot move forward, or crawl at speeds under 5mph, but your rpms are reaching 7, there is something seriously wrong. I have taken it in a few times only to be told they cannot find or recreate the issues, so they send me on my way. It sounds as if many others are having the exact same issues. I am very nervous that my luck in pulling off out of harms way will run out. I have called my dealership to once again have it looked at but they cannot get me in for 10 days.... should I even drive this car if it is not reliable?? I truly am frightened to drive now, and this is my only car and am a single mother. Not sure what I am supposed to do. I really hope that Ford recalls this, as I have read that there are several lawsuits pending this exact issue.

One week prior to event-the wrench light came on while starting car. I turned ignition off and re-started car ignition-drove fine without further incident until 1 week later: Pulled into a 1 mile driveway to get to my work office suite (flat road) driving about 30 miles, car came to a stop without warning-at that time all the warning lights came on. I put it into park/with emergency brake as it began rolling near an office suite-the steering wheel was frozen. Have had same stalling issues while driving car since purchasing the car at 18,000 miles-each time told different things are causing it by dealer, I.e. tss/oss sensors, ebt, reflash pom which I had fixed. With curren event- are in process of diagnosing it.

At 90,000 miles the transmission started slipping took it to the transmission shop did a diagnostic change the transmission oil and nothing came on the test they said there was nothing wrong with it it slipped again in a couple weeks I had to pull over put it in park started again and it went. After eight months of working good yesterday same slipping happened again took it to my mechanic did a diagnostic and again came out ok this is crazy. Planning a trip and he says I wouldn't take the car because you never know what will happen the transmission seems to be slipping but there's no recalls on it and read a lot of complaints on this why is there no recall?

Car will jerk, slip, beat and bang. Stopped pulling at a red light. Got towed home. Took off battery cable for 30mins. Started working again for awhile. Does this often, repair shops have no clue except for new tranny.it will also try to pull forward while in park when you have the other problems also. It has done this while sitting still and while running 70 on the interstate.

Speedometer and tachometer at random speeds quits working, low tire pressure light, wrench light, airbag light, check engine light. Constant loud clunking sound when changing gears. The car kicks back as if transmission is not engaging and has loss of acceleration and wheels roll and when red light turns green, the car takes time to accelerate and wheels start rolling and make a loud sound.I pull over the vehicle on the side of the road every time and turn it off, then turn the vehicle on again so it can go back to normal. Usually happens on both city streets or highway at a random speed between 45 mph and 60 mph. 114,000 miles. I have been having this issue since I bought the vehicle on Feb, 2018 and took it to multiple mechanics and all of them claimed it's either a speed sensor issue/ transmission failure/ electrical system.

Ptu has overheated causing the oil inside to become black and gummy, also causing one or both seals to fail leading to the undercoating of the vehicle to be covered in black thick oil. This was noticed only after a 200 mile run on the interstate in the winter of 2017, 65-80 mph... we have since found that numerous others have had the same issue with this generation of AWD ptu's and is a engineering issue with the design of the vehicle

Check engline light & wrench comes on and the 2008 Edge suddenly lost power, then entered "limp mode". my husband took it in 3 different times to the service department, and each time was told they couldn't find the problem. The 4th time I had the same problem on a 45mph, 3 lane road. The power just went out, accelarator no longer worked, but then returned but only about 5mph. Lucky I wasn't killed! I took it back to service dept. And told them they needed to check the throttle body (etb). They laughed at me, but then called 3 days later to tell me that it is the etb and over $750. I contacted Ford as they had issued the so-called "customer satisfaction program" extending the etb warranty coverage for up to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles. Ford says all vehicles are eligible for the program, regardless of mileage, but not 2008. Though they acknowledged they know the problem goes back to 2005 models, they feel my car is too old & has too many miles at 104K. This is a life threatening problem and Ford refuses to do anything. When someone dies because of this known issue, I hope that Ford executives are held as complicitors in premeditated murder. After all the problems with the brakes, no parts available, and now this, I will never buy another Ford and will get this piece of junk out of my life asap.

Takata recall. The contact owns a 2008 Ford Edge. The contact had not received a notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16V384000 (air bags), but found the recall online. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. John kennedy Ford of conshohocken (1403 ridge pike, conshohocken, pa 19428 (888) 377-1951) was contacted and confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle decelerated without warning and the vehicle jerked. The contact took the vehicle to a collision center for body repairs and the technician informed her that there was a transmission failure. The transmission needed to be replaced, but the vehicle was not repaired. The dealer stated that there was no extended warranty for the transmission. The manufacturer was made aware of the issues and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Edge. While driving 25 mph, the wrench icon and the air bag warning indicator illuminated. The accelerator pedal failed to work and the vehicle gradually came to a complete stop. The speed on the odometer and the tachometer was incorrect. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, turned off, and turned on the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to normal. The failure recurred and the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle automatically restarted and the speed automatically increased from 0 to 70 mph. The contact applied the brakes to reduce the speed. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 105,929.

While regular driving or when in the process of engaging a stop sign the car engine disengages from the transmission and loose any connection between the engine and transmission. If one steps on the gas the transmission makes a hollowing noise and fails to move, the engine RPM increase with pressing the gas padel but the transmission does not engage as if one is low on transmission fluid. In order for the car to engage into motion one has to shut down the engine complete and then restart the car where after it just run S fine as if nothing happened. We have encountered this situation three times this year. The car has around 58600 miles on it. This is a very dangerous situation to be in specially of one is encouraging and intersection etc and is very scary to drive at times...thank you. We called the Ford dealer and they told us they have never heard any thing like this...this all happened on city streets and while the car was moving or when coming to a stop sign.

While driving, in full motion, , the car comes to an almost stop! scares you to death, you check to make sure you haven't accidently put the car in neutral, all the warning lights on the dash light up, the check engine, the low tire gage symbol, the tool light, , the speedometer stops working, . the car refuse to move forward, placed in reverse it moves backward, the Ford dealer is unable to fix the problem, codes don't show up to help identify the problem. The danger is it happens while you are driving. Its been diagnosed as a transmission problem (very expensive) but that's not what it is. You reprogram it temporary, by taking the positive battery cable loose for a few seconds, the car drives perfect until it happens again, its happen three times with this car, I have called the Ford cooperate office to report this problem.

Vehicle on the highway feels like im constantly being rear ended upon pressing the gas pedal and accelerating at higher speeds/gear. Had a hard thumping bang into gear like the transmission bangs into gear. Shifts fine on normal roads but only notice on the highway especially in trafiic with stop go shifting. Very scary to drive and after it happens it feels like it has no power accelerating. Mechanic cant diagnose due to not having any code stored. Seems like many Edge owners experience this same issue and cant seem to fix this. Hopefully Ford has this recall addressed very soon. The only reason why I bought this vehichle was safety and it seems every recall isnt living up to that standard.
