CarComplaints.com Notes: Say what you will about the styling of the Ford Edge, but the bottom line is owners seem to love this vehicle. That is, of course, except in the case of it's dangerous, worrisome and unexplained issues with random engine stalling.

Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.

Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

I've seen this issue here and on other websites. This absolutely should have been a recall. Could have been a major safety issue as all a sudden i lost acceleration at 70 mph and had to pull over on the shoulder. I probably blew a couple coils in "limp home mode" as i couldn't go any faster than 40 mph without the car shaking violently. Had to drive 30 miles that way to my mechanic

I have read all over the internet about the coil and PCM failures. Everything points to a design flaw and Ford should replace it.

  1. The dealer has replace the dash cluster and computer parts. I am still having the same problems the radio goes off for 1 or 2 minutes while driving. The doors fail to lock at times and warning lights on the dash comes on and start flashing.

    2. The transmissions starts to shifting rough. I have taken it to the Dealer on numerous times for repair. I have left it over night for repair. They said it did not duplicate the problem when they drove it, As soon as get home the next day it starts again.

I am definitely a fan of this SUV. It's been great up until now. The inherent danger in stalling on the highway at a busy intersection can not be overlooked. i was luck not to get hit half a dozen times in the 20 minutes it took for a state trooper to push me out of harms way. if this is a common problem, it should be addressed.

While driving, car started sputtering and vibrating. I made it to my Mechanic, barely. He said coil melted and that it continues to fire and sends a surge of power back to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). He stated it was a faulty design in the PCM because when the coil goes out it should stop firing. He said that only the ford dealership could fix it and said to have it towed. If I tried to drive it any more it could catch fire and burn to the ground.

I towed to Ford and they stated this was a common problem and they have a TSB on how to fix. They stated there was a design issue with the PCM in Ford/Mercury/Lincoln in some range of years that included 2007 Edge. They had 3 or 4 in the shop right then to fix the same issue. The estimate to fix was $2,958.

This is NOT normal wear and tear and a design issue. If a coil burns out, it is a $100 fix (very easy do it yourself) or $200 at the shop. Instead, the PCM fries all the coils and its self and you have to replace it all with their new and improved model they came up with.

If you have this issue, please call and report at:

Ford Claim: 1-800-392-3673 and NHTSA: 1-888-327-4236

This issue needs to be reported for possible recalls or reimbursements.

Why the hell hasn't Ford been required to issue a recall for these bad powertrain control modules? This is common on the 2007 Flex and Ford has not come up with a proper repair only to continue to fail replacement parts at the owner's expense. For over 5 years this part is in such demand it is always on back-order. This is a hazardous defect and can stop the engine without any advance notice and causes damage to other ignition parts when it fails. Complete repair cost can exceed $3500.00
