CarComplaints.com Notes: Say what you will about the styling of the Ford Edge, but the bottom line is owners seem to love this vehicle. That is, of course, except in the case of it's dangerous, worrisome and unexplained issues with random engine stalling.

Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.

Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

SINCE CAR WAS A YEAR OLD THERE SEEMS TO BE A SMALL JERK UPON TAKING OFF AFTER A STOP. TOOK TO A MECHANIC, DID SOME SERVICE TO ENTIRE ENGINE. RAN GOOD FOR A WHILE AND BEGAN TO JERK AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME IT GOT ONE TIME I HAD TO LOOK TO THE BACK TO SEE IF I GOT HIT. I HAVE A FRIEND WITH AN EDGE LIKE MINE AND HER'S DOES THE SAME THING.

SCARY SOMETIMES.

Edge SEL 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 28,000 miles

Replaced right rear bearings almost a year ago. Started hearing humming noise coming from rear end about a couple months ago and was concerned that the left bearing was going bad only I couldn't pin down whether the noise was coming from the left or the right. Took to dealership on 10/21 fearing it was the right bearing which was bad. Car still under powertrain 5 yr/60k warranty since purchased in May 2007 and it only has 28,000 miles. Found out that the differential was failing and needed replacement. Which the dealership didn't have in stock and so far, over a week to get the parts.

Seems like the 2007 Edge has significant problems with the rear drivetrain probably with AWD versions. I am considering selling the car since the powertrain warranty will expire in May 2012 - anyone out there wants a perfect looking and running vehicle (well perfect at the time that I sell it).
