I was driving between 60-65 MPH on Interstate 26 hauling a camper. My 2013 F-150 powered down without warning and a giant gold wrench and giant red battery warning light came on in the center of the info display. I limped to the side of the road with a lot of SC traffic. I hit OK to acknowledge the warnings and both the wrench and battery warning reduced in size and stayed lit up on bottom of info display. I thought I might be able to reset by turning the truck off and restarting, but I was too far from home to take a chance on not starting back up, especially having a pet with me.
I contacted a mechanic. He said it sounds like an alternator or belt issue. I checked under the hood to look for a loose belt or battery harness. I drove home slowly with the warning lights on. I had an exit plan if the truck caught on fire. We made it home.
I started the truck about an hour later and there were no warning lights on the display. We are going to hook up a code reader tomorrow, but based on some posts on this site it sounds like I may be chasing a ghost.
I grew up with Ford and for the first time in my life I may need to re-think my next truck. I was shocked to see this might not be an isolated incident. I will be contacting my local Ford service center tomorrow. Very scary! Thank you for this site.
