After vehicle was parked for 1 hour 15 minutes a fire started under the dashboard. Vehicle was totaled. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
HVAC fan under dash on passengers side has a shortage in the wiring to the fuse box under dash on drivers side. Could open and close fuse box to get fan to work then stopped working at all. Rear seat belt locks all fell apart. Passenger and drivers side doors will not open.
Speedometer needle fluctuated wildly, then it registered zero. Ten seconds later the car's driveablity went down due to the on-board computer receiving zero speed input: Limited accelleration, no cruise control, etc. End result: Both speed cable and speed control sensor broken; connection pin from transmission to sensor stuck or snapped --> will need to drop transmission and tear it open just to get at a $25 part!

While driving the smell of smoke came from the dash and then the heater blower control switch stopped working. I had a letter from Ford dated October of 1999 that they were having problems with the switches. They informed me that they would extend the warranty on that component. Now when I ask them about it, nobody seems to know anything about it. I am convinced that a small fire was under my dash board. Also, my defroster won't function correctly and makes for dangerous driving.

Driving down interstate, airconditioner went out, smelled something melting, smoke from under hood when opened, told it was air, could drive, blew 2 head gaskets due to cooling system not working, cost over 600$. fan only runs on high and low. Heater motor going out. Manual transmission slips out of gear while driving. Back doors squeak really loud, and oil don't work. Check engine light on always. Airbag lights on always. Back seat belt broke. Altonator going out. Radiator leaks then stops, leaks then stops. Fan makes a loud noise when running.
While driving engine will overheat. Temperature gauge will go all way to red part, and a dark smoke will come from dashboard with a plastic smell. Cooling system will not work.
Switch failed when removed to replace it was melted to the to the wiring conector and one year later the same part failed it had the same problem it will not work in the high but will work on other two speeds.
The heater and ac fan first failed at 34,000 miles and was repaired under warranty. The fan motor (under hood) and fan controls (under dash) were both "chared". the same routine occured somewhere between 60 and 80 000 miles. That time the dealership said there was a new repair kit for this defect only since it was out of warranty I would have to pay for it. I did.. this fall the fan quit again. Almost the same time we received a letter from Ford announcing a recall for the heater wiring. After installing the components the dealer said the fan started then quit. Checking their work the decided everything was correct so they chased the wires back to the fuse box. There they couldn't find anything wrong until they pulled the fuse box and the entire underside was charred. When I think of the number of time I brought gas for my lawnmower home in the cat it frightens me. There could have been a real fire. It might have been due to the original problem just not found until now.
