Tie rod end fell off in an intersection with right front wheel turning sideways. Son was driving pickup and called me to come and help get it off the middle of the road at 6:30 am Sunday morning with temperature outside minus 26 degrees. I used a floor jack and lifted limp wheel up and got pickup out of traffic lane. Popped tie rod back on ball to load on trailer but as soon as you move steering wheel it comes right off, not very handy at - 26.
No warning, pickup drove good and didn't wander. Good thing it didn't come off while meeting a semi or school bus. Seems to be an unusually strong pull on tie rod forcing the ball from the socket. Grease squirted out when I put the ball back into the socket and the joint had been greased regularly.
