I purchased a set of 4 Firestone steeltex radial 245/75R 16 E-range tires for my pickup 3 or 4 years ago. The tires have approximately 20-25 thousand miles on them. In June of this year one of the tires showed the beginnings of a tread separation of about 4 inches along the tread line of the tire. Several weeks ago (Sept, 07) one of the rear tires experienced a total separation of the tire tread while driving at 55 mph. The tread separation occurred at exactly the same point as the tire which failed several months earlier. All tires are maintained at the vehicle manufacturers recommended load of 50 front and 80 rear. Pressures are checked twice monthly. None of the tires have been repaired. The last tire failure which led to a violent tread separation did $2406 worth of damage to the rear fender of my pickup. Since two of the four tires have experienced tread separation, I no longer feel safe with the other two tires. I feel lucky that there was no personal injury...yet.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500. The vehicle has kumho Venture, size LT245/75R16 tires (na). While driving 65 mph, the contact heard a loud pounding noise coming from the front of the vehicle. The consumer stated the vehicle was hard to control but was able to bring truck to a stop. The tread separated on the front driver side tire. As of September 7, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the tires. The failure and current mileages were 40,000. *updated 12/12/07 updated 12/12/07
Consumer states while traveling 55 mph, vehicle left front tire blew out due to tread separation. The blowout resulted in damage to the fender, lights and bumper. The consumer requested reimbursement was all expenses related to the tire failure.
Third tire separation from a set of four tires purchased from american tires. The tire is Goodyear Wrangler gsa LT265/75R16 load range "D". the second tire separation caused damage to the vehicle.
While driving the left front tire tread separated from the tire, a few months later the right rear tire tread separated causing extensive damage to the truck bed, ride-rite airbags and exhaust system, there were signs on the remaining 2 tires of tread separation, the consumer is requesting reimbursement for all damages (kelly safari tires lt26575R16 dot# J11ktl5098). Consumer rotated the tires, checked balance but noticed increased vibration, consumer discovered separation close to the rim, consumer purchased four new tires and request reimbursement (Goodyear Wrangler rt/S LT245/75R16 load range E). Nlm
Tires rotated, then, drove vehicle and it started vibrating. Pulled over and checked tires, saw nothing wrong. Continued driving and vehicle continued to vibrate. Arrived home and inspected tires again. Noticed split in 1 tire and cracks around other 2 tires. Contacted Goodyear. Referred to retailer and was offered a prorate on tires. Later informed no tires available with raised white lettering. Tires over 5 years old. 1995, Dodge, 2500.
PE00 48 ; she was traveling about 60mph on highway and heard a noise. She was able to pull over, and noticed that rear left tire tread separated from rim. But tire was still inflated. There were no injuries. Tire was a Goodyear, LT245/75R16M/S/ Wrangler #at, #dot mk11ctov504. Goodyear has agreed to replace tire.
All four Goodyear Wrangler load range E tires (P23575R16) began to separate, Goodyear replaced the tires with the same model. The right rear tire fully separated, causing damage to the vehicle, the consumer paid to upgrade all tires to Goodyear workhorse tires. 2 of these tires failed at the same time also causing damage to the vehicle, the left rear tire blisterd and was removed prior to separating, the left front tire completely separated.
I have had at least 5 of these tires where the complete tread completely seperated from the tire. Have photos, actual tire leftovers, and receipts for proof of purchase and mechanics pro-rate adjustments. Out of all 6 tires originally purchased and the numerous pro-rated adjustments, only one remains in use and has reached a use of aprox. 50K miles. I realize now that I should have written about these problems as I encountered them, but it is not every day that one has loads of time to trouble shoot, find associations, and report findings. Additionally I did not realize until recent news reports that these can be life threatening issues.( dot number: Tire size:/85R16 )
