Dodge Truck owner since 1996, I have owned 4 to date with three in my driveway currently. I wasn't aware that the Hemi's had a known lifter and cam problem until multiple trips to the dealership and scouring the internet. It's a fact that the 5.7 Hemi's have a common problem with the cam shaft lobes being eaten up even after following regular maintenance schedules with recommended oil type and viscosity The ticking, that is not a broken exhaust bolt (also a common and recurring problem and one I had at 30,000 miles), is one or more failed/failing lifters and one or more worn camshaft lobes.
Neither Dodge/RAM nor the dealership would acknowledge the issue until the ticking would not go away. Took the truck to the Dealership and it was torn down to reveal several bad lifters and worn down cam lobes. I was told this common problem results in a very good chance the metal shavings may have damaged the crank and bearings and if flushed and a new cam and lifters replaced could fail again within a year or so (estimated repair $3,200-$4,000).
A new long block was recommended at a cost of $8,500-9,500 with new gasket kit included but they lowered the price after I researched other Mopar certified engines for $7800. I chose to replace the engine as the truck is in such great condition otherwise and has many years or usefulness especially with the cost of new trucks today.
Now, 7 months later it seems one of the new exhaust bolts have broken and the exhaust tick is back. I also have a coolant leak at the thermostat and water pump gasket......which I suspect was due to the old gaskets being reused.. Took it in for these items and they tried to tell me the water pump was bad and no ticking was heard...Texan Dodge in Humble.....
