Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7L

I bought this truck for an employee and he made me aware of the problem years ago. I have had a couple of service shops attempt to diagnose it, but have only been told that changing parts "may" eliminate the problem, but that any work performed would not guarantee a satisfactory resolution. Because it occurs intermittently and occasionally without a clear explanation, I did nothing.

I have driven the truck and had the problem occur and it feels as if the front wheels will become out of unison and suddenly begin to combat each other, shaking violently, Slowing down allows the wheels to get into harmony again. The problem occurs when driving at highway speeds above 55 and usually after driving across a rough stretch or transition from one road surface to another or across a road joint, from one section to another.

I called a local Dodge dealership and they will inspect it for $120.00 in an attempt to diagnose the problem, but I am hesitant to spend $120.00 to have them tell me something I'm already aware of or that they think my front end is worn out and needs to be completely replaced.

This is a chicken and egg issue. They may tell me that the wobble is because the parts are worn and need replacing while I feel the parts, if worn, may be worn due to the wobble.

In forums online, I see this problem is not an isolated one, but experienced by other owners of this type vehicle.

Ram 1500 SLT 4.7L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 5,000 miles

It first started as severe shaking whenever I hit a bump, especially on an curve. The truck would hop and shake and become uncontrollable until I slowed. This still happens but now I also get an uncontrollable wobble whenever I drive at highway speed and there is any kind of incline or bend in the road. Only fix is to slow down significantly.. It's dangerous! I've become trained to deal with it but it's certainly unsafe and I always worry that it will happen on a slick road and I won't be able to hold it on the road. I've replaced tires, aligned, balanced, road force balanced and nothing fixes it!

Ram 1500 SLT 4.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 90,500 miles

This issue throws you in another of traffic, you really have to have a great grip and control to get it back in lane not to cause a crash. Very poor design and crap that they only recalled a certain number of these vehicles to fix and not all of them.

Ram 1500 Big Horn 4.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 69,000 miles

This is first Ram I have ever bought, I've brought it to the dealer for every oil change and every scheduled maintenance. The dealer is the only one that has ever touched the truck. I only have 70K miles on it, it is in very good condition and now have a major front end shake. Its rough to check the forums and other sites and find out that this is a VERY common problem (Dodge Death Wobble) on many different years and models of Rams and Dodge is doing nothing about it.
