Just before going on a family vacation I got the gas cap warning on my odometer. I drove to the dealership, bought a new gas cap and replaced it. Gas cap warning did not clear. Dealership parts department said the error will clear after a few hundred miles. Went on family vacation to California and gas cap warning never cleared. In fact the engine service light came on.
I drove to dealership, after diagnostic, the tech and service adviser said that the gas tank smoke test on the evap system failed and that they found a leak at the fuel tank inlet valve weld seam and that the entire tank would have to be replaced at a cost of $1240.00. I asked the tech how the hell the weld would leak and he said that it is a design flaw and that the fuel eats away at the seam. I told him that every time I fill up my tank gas shoots out the top when full which has also stained the body panel of the truck. He said this was most likely the cause. I see this issue all over the forums on both Rams and Durangos. Why is this not a recall? My tank shoots out gas when full in the middle of summer in Phoenix on a hot pavement. I'm wondering how someone hasn't died yet. This should seriously be a recall.
This truck is a lemon and no one can figure out how to fix the damn issue, We have replaced the gas cap had it reset and it went right back to the errors. This is just one of the many things that is wrong with this truck. We went back to the Dealer ship pretty much was told "oh well deal with it" Just bought this truck 3 weeks ago.
My gas mileage declined and gas cap indicator came on in the dash display. I have looked for leaks in the system and replaced the gas cap. Fuel mileage went from 17 mpg to 13 mpg.
