My 2003 Dodge Ram started missing and running poorly out of the blue on my way home from work. Made it to Auto Zone and had the computer checked - Said I needed a Crankcase Sensor. So I replaced it. Next it said it needed a new Throttle Body - so I replaced that. None of that worked. Took it to the shop next door and they said the #7 cylinder was dead. Needed a new motor - cost would be 8K to 10K for motor and installation. No way on a 16 year old truck.
Took it home and pulled the valve cover and find a broken valve spring. Went to replace it and the valve was stuck. Pulled the head and valve was bent. Looked down in the cylinder and metal shaving were all over the top of the piston. Apparently the keeper broke loose and damage the piston head and cylinder walls. Now I need a motor or pull this one apart and rebuild. Either way - big bucks....
Regular maintenance was performed on this truck. Synthetic oil used always. I understand that the truck has a 173K on it, but the spring should not just break and cause major damage.
Does anyone know if Dodge ever had a recall on this type of problem?
Thanks!
