Several times in past, we had to jiggle the key before it would turn our van ignition switch. 2 weeks ago, while on vacation with 2 small children, we stopped to get gas 10 hours from home. Inserted key and it wouldn't turn to start. Key then became hung in ignition. Called for auto locksmith, who couldn't get the key out. Called for auto service, who sent toll truck. Couldn't toll it because tires were locked. After jiggling locked steering wheel, key ignition, gear shift for 3 hours, a bystander suggested lightly tapping the key inward with a screwdriver.
This released something so the key turned the ignition and we were able to start van and get home. Bought the van used with only 35,000 miles. Wondered why previous owner had 5 sets of keys... I think I know now. Has recall on transmission shifter cable... to be serviced next week. Wondering if this could be the problem? Or, is it most likely the ignition switch?
