Dodge/Chrysler floor shifter recall

There is currently a life time Dodge/Chrysler floor shifter recall on certain years and models. If you cannot shift from Park, your vehicle may be covered under the Dodge/Chrysler floor shifter warranty. W

Here is the “official” word from Dodge/Chrysler:

Customer Satisfaction Notification K39

Transmission Shifter Interlock Lever At Chrysler Group LLC, you can be assured that we are changing the way we look at quality. To prove our commitment to quality, the company is investing in and pwing improvements be performed on some 2005 through 2007 model year Dodge Charger, Magnum and Chrysler 300 equipped with a floor shifter. The transmission gear shift lever interlock return spring hook on your vehicle may break. A broken interlock return spring hook will result in the inability to move the gear shift lever out of the “PARK” position. What your dealer will do:

Chrysler will service your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor). To do this, your dealer will replace the transmission shifter interlock lever. The work will take about one hour to complete. We recommend that you make an appointment with your dealer to minimize your inconvenience. What you should do:

Simply contact your Chrysler, Jeep, or Dodge dealer, at your convenience, to schedule a service appointment. Your dealer will collect the necessary information to ensure that the appropriate parts are available so your service can be completed in a timely manner. Although not required, we recommend bringing this letter with you to your dealer, when you bring your vehicle in for this service. If you need help: Please contact the Chrysler Group Recall Assistance Center at 1-8008531403

I did contact the Chrysler Assistance Center and was told my car was not covered as have thousands of other Chrysler owners with the same problem (just Google "charger pink plastic thingy") Why would Chrysler cover the pink plastic thingy in some cars and not others? It is the same part in all the cars listed in the above recall. Most of us had to have our cars towed to the dealer only to find the warranty was not valid for our cars and told it would cost up to $500 to repair. I jerry-rigged mine to get home and found quite a few You-Tube videos on how to fix it myself. Most recommended purchasing the replacement part at Chrysler dealers. Why would I replace a cheap pink plastic thingy with a cheap white plastic thingy? I ground off the remaining broken nub, drilled a 7/64" hole where nub was, inserted 7/64" cotter pin with original spring in keyhole, cut and bent the cotter pin legs. Fixed! Total cost $0. Labor 1 hour (my time) SCREW YOU CHRYSLER. If someone wants to file a class action lawsuit against Chrysler I will definitely sign on. Jeff H

Had to be towed in, dealer stated this was a common problem, that is why they stock 8 shifters in inventory. There ought to be a recall by the factory if the problem is so common.

This is a bit of a duplicate complaint because I found this answer posted by James P. If you can't get your shifter out of park its because of a child safety switch that has gone bad. I've seen people floundering on this one like I had so hope my input helps. The shifter on my wife's 06 magnum has been getting stuck in park for months but we were always able to eventually get it into gear after trying various voodoo( i.e. rock the car, turn the steering wheel, turn it on and off) until today when my wife or I couldn't get it into gear period. James P posted that if you lift the bezel out from around the shifter you can see a curved pink switch ( on mine it is bottom right side). So I grabbed a long flat head screwdriver and pushed this switch around a bit (it may help to know that there is an access hole for the switch too if you remove the junk tray next to the shifter on mine anyways). First few tries nothing happened but kept at it until the switch just completely popped out. That did it! Went into gear just fine after that. I was worried that maybe I had broke it so I went and talked to my mechanic to see if I needed to fix it now that the switch is sitting somewhere inside the housing to the shifter. He says no need to worry and as long as I don't plan on having small kids play unattended in the car to forget about it. So I would say that if you want to save the time and money on this just pop it out ( took me all of 5 minutes). Hope this helps!

This new problem just happened last night. I drove my car yesterday and then last night I went to leave and the gear shifter was stuck in park. I can't mover my car. I had to bum a ride to work. This is my only means of transportation. I called the dealership about recalls on this particular incident and believe it or not there was nothing. Why in the world would the corporate allow a plastic piece to be put in the gear shift knowing that plastic melts when it gets to hot or breaks from constant usage. This is another safety issue that Dodge Chrysler ignores until someone gets killed or seriously injured behind, God forbids. Someone needs to help us with this in a hurry. We are being ripped off.

THIS IS A SPRING IN THE SHIFTER WHICH I WAS TOLD WILL MELT OR CRACK BECAUSE OF HEAT... NOW THE REPLACEMENT IS A STEEL SPRING... DODGE/CHRYSLER WILL NOT HONOR IT AS A RECALL YET? REALLY IT';S ALL OVER THE WEB HOW PEOPLE GET STICK IN VARIOUS PLACES. MAYBE BECAUSE NO ONE WAS KILLED YET FROM THIS FAULTY PIECE OF PLASTIC??? I CALLED THEM AND THEY HONESTLY SAID IT'S NOT COVERED AND WE STAND BEHIND OUR PRODUCTS. I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD SAY THIS BUT I AM DONE WITH THIS COMPANY AND AMERICAN CARS... PUT TOGETHER WITH GLUE..

I went to leave for work one day, and low and behold, I could not shift out of park! I called a friend of the family who is my main mechanic and let him take a look-see. After taking apart shifter and examining the problem and called Dodge and found that the shifing mechanism went bad. My mechanic told me it sounded like it was possibly a common problem, due to the fact the Dodge dealer had such a surplus of new shifting mechanisms in stock. Fortunatly, since I was broke at the time, my mechanic left the plate from my shifter off and showed me a little pink button down inside the gear shift area I could push to shift it into gear. If you gain access by removing the plate around the gear shifter, look down inside the shifter towards the "park" side of the shifter and theres a little pink button inside. While pushing the button, you can shift it where need be. Very annoying, but I did it for a couple weeks until I had the $350.00ish bones to fix it. Love my Magnum, but hate the normal wierd Dodge problems.

WHAT IF THIS HAPPENED TO ME ONCE I HAD GONE TO THE STORE? THE COST FOR TOWING GOES ON MY SHOULDERS AND THE COST OF REPAIR AS WELL. I READ THAT THERE IS SOME CHEAP PLASTIC PART IN THE SHIFTER THAT BREAKS...WHATEVER HAPPENED TO MAKING CARS THE OLD WAY WITH REAL METAL PARTS NOT CHEAP GARBAGE PLASTIC PARTS THAT BREAK??? TELL ME WHAT GOOD REASON THESE CAR MANUFACTURERS HAVE FOR THIS? OH LET ME GUESS...MONEY! IT IS CHEAPER TO PRODUCE PLASTIC BS PARTS AND WHEN IT BREAKS YOU PAY MONEY TO FIX IT AND REPLACE THE PART! THAT IS BS. I AM TOTALLY DISGUSTED THAT MY CAR WITH ONLY 11 K MILES ON IT IS BROKEN AND SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY AND I CANNOT EVEN DRIVE IT NOW! TOTALLY ABSOLUTELY NEVER GONNA BUY ANOTHER DODGE IF THIS IS THE KINDA CAR THEY PRODUCE! AND I ALSO READ THIS COST LIKE 300 TO 400 TO FIX? GET OUT OF HERE! FOR A PLASTIC PART??? w/o warning my car would not shift out of park one morning when I went to take my daughter to preschool. I searched online and found that it could be from a brake light being out so I checked and sure enough the driver's side brake light was out. I replaced that and made sure all other lights on the car were working and thought my problem would be fixed. To no surprise my car was still stuck in park! I have no other transportation so I was relieved to find there was an "override" for the gear shifter that was quite simple. I accessed the pink plastic tab in the pocket to the right of the shifter that is designed to release the gear shifter but it did absolutely nothing. Luckily there were further instructions to access the cable that the pink tab is supposed to be releasing so I could manually take the car out of park until I could figure out why my car would not shift out of park. It is an extreme inconvenience and its ridiculous that I have to drive around with all these pieces off my car! This is the first car I bought that was close to new (1 model yr 20,000mi) and I have had more problems with it than all my 10+yr old over 100,000mi cars combined! I went to an auto parts store to see if they could help me. They examined the shift assembly and said it appears to be working with the brake the way it should and that there seemed to be a spring that was either missing or broken but they could not access the inner workings because the plastics were welded together. Not only do they think that I would need to replace the entire shift housing, but that part is not available anywhere but a dealership! Again, that's no big surprise since I have found that most parts are only available through the dealership. Apparently, the parts are made to break right after your warranty expires and even the replacement parts are poorly manufactured. Even the fact that you cant open your truck without power is so stupid considering my battery is back there!! so if my battery dies its a pain to access! and good luck jumping it!! Its pretty pathetic when my last car (a toyota) had 260,000mi on it and ran like a charm. Dodge needs to recall quite a few items and the shift problems should definitely be on that list!!!!

Never had any mechanical or electrical problems until one night I went to use the vehicle and the shifter would not move from park. I call Daimler Chrysler the next morning because I have an extended warranty plan from them. I spoke to a rep. and explained the problem to which he said that it was covered under my plan. I was delighted to find that out so I proceeded further with him in order to have the car towed to the nearest dealer. All was well until the dealer ran the diagnostic and called me to inform me that the warranty does not cover it. I then called back Chrysler only to find out now that is isn't covered after they had already said that it was and now I will have to pay $130 for the dealer just running diagnostics. I checked the internet and there are hundreds of people with the same identical problem and I don't understand why this is not a recall as of yet.

Now I am in the process of waiting for Chrysler to call me and let me know what action they will take. So my car has been in the shop all weekend and I am in limbo waiting for them to call me back. I believe that this should be a recall or just pay for every occurrence...and I don't understand why it is not covered under my extended warranty.

Who is responsible for this type of bad and poor engineering problem? Now I am going to pay for it out of my pocket, what the hell is going on here? How does a gear not ever come out of park, how does this sh*t happen for no valid explanation and how does it happen when it is not an engine issue? This is a whole lot of BS and Dodge is responsible for this stupid sh*t. How do I fix this and not cost me my pocket with a big headache? And we need to get together and sue these idiots.

This is Absolutely stupid. Not to be able to shift is a new one. And the car shudders also. I got it fixed. My warranty was up, but if you ask me, it's a part that should not have broken. The dealership installed a new 4578087AE SHIFTER: TRANSMISSION $149.OO and the labor 209.98. Making a grand total of 372.02 out of my pocket. Also my supervisor said his 300 did the same thing last year.

Got in the car to take kids to school and transmission would not move out of park. Similar thing happened within the year that we first bought the car, transmission would get stuck in a particular shift. Yes, we should get together or bring a class action against dodge for faulty gear shift. I have never owned a vehicle that needed this type of repair. It is labor intensive and the dealer wont make the part available for replacement. Furter, it is equally difficult to get any repairs done by our local dodge dealer. The service personnel are the worst ever!

Also without a dip stick for the transmission, it is no way to check the level of transmission fluid.
