CarComplaints.com Notes: This is a classic example of why you should avoid the first model year of a new car. Sure, it's new and shiny but there's going to be some growing pains.

The 2005 Magnum has problems with the gear shifter getting stuck, a shaky and sometimes stalled engine and transmission failure at 75,000 miles.

Let someone else deal with those headaches.

valve seat failure - engine destroyed valve seat failure - engine destroyed valve seat failure - engine destroyed valve seat failure - engine destroyed

Had this car since 2005, only owner. I had a problems over the years, but reading reviews and other people I know having this vehicle engines all went out between 100k-120k. Dodge has known about these valve seats being garbage, and seats dropping destroying the cylinder walls and still never chose make corrections and do a recall on this. I love my car, if it wasn't customized, I wouldn't be buying another engine for it, but hell, I've already did entire hose change over, religiously change oil every 4-5k... always ran full synthetic... and 30/60/90 services always done, plugs changed every 30k.

It's a shame they don't put the parts and workmanship into these like Toyota/Honda. You can beat the hell out of those cars and they give 200k-300k with no problems... Apparently all the new engines are coming with with all the corrected issues addressed over the years. Dealership has a terrible warranty with 3 yr or 36k miles... It should be extended warranty or Min. 5yrs, 100k.

This is the last Dodge I will own. Collectible since they sold to Stellaris and they have no intentions on making Magnum with Hellcat/ScatPack series... SMH.

My wife left the dark job site I was working on which was deep in the hill's. I was staying overnight making sure the homeless stayed away. As she headed home she crossed over US 101 about 100 yards into the dark on a two lane road (5 miles of empty county road) all the dash light came on, the motor shook violently. She quickly pulled off onto a small shoulder and the motor died. She called me and I drove to pick her up. Found her barely off the road, standing near the edge of the cliff. Hazard lights barely working. The value dropped out and detonated the motor. That God she wasn't on a 5 land highway in the number 1 lane. Something has to be done with these motors. We had a new motor from Powertrain put in by our dealership. We had just replaced the transmission.

hotterMichelincontinualcongenialcentennialDriving and pulling in to park when engine sounded like you had dropped a piece of silverware in a garbage disposal. Turned it off and tied to restart the engine nothing no clicks frozen. Had it towed to Dodge Dealer in Orlando FL result dropped valve took out piston, rod and block engine had 94683 miles. Replaced with new short block total $6500 parts and labor out the door. If the car wasn't in such a beautiful shape would of junked it Was surprised to see so many had the same problem. Noted from service guy that the Hemi's have this problem they run hotter then others.

The car has had its problems throughout the years all after the warranty ran out except for air bags. The car has been serviced always at Dodge dealers and oil changed every 3k. Had to replace fuel tank, A/C, turn indicator switch which broke inside of steering column. Biggest pain was when transmission locked in park, the quick release inside of console had broke off a $4.00 part a hundred for labor thank goodness had free towing from insurance.

One big ripoff is they FLASH THE COMPUTER, I know it has to be done but $100.00 come on..

A question do other Magnum owners go through tires quickly? Just normal driving city and highway I am on my fourth set, the first were continental rebate from class action suit, tried Goodyear Eagles, Michelin, running Tiger Paws now seem the best so far.

valve seat failure - engine destroyed valve seat failure - engine destroyed valve seat failure - engine destroyed valve seat failure - engine destroyed valve seat failure - engine destroyed valve seat failure - engine destroyed

Wonderful day, just driving to K-mart to buy some work clothes. I go inside get my stuff, and come out ... no start.... I figure maybe its just a weird problem with the computer or something so I wait and try it again. It starts and blows a whole bunch of smoke and sounds like marbles in the motor. Knowing at that point something really bad had happened, I drive home smoking and knocking...

I knew I had to leave for Cayman in a few days so I rented a car... and waited until I returned to deal with it.

I ended up taking the heads off the motor after I found spark plugs had impact damage. The pictures speak for themselves...

I did all the work myself, sent the block out for repair, had the heads repaired, almost a year later I am almost done....Turns out i dropped 2 valve seats on opposite sides of the motor at the same time....I find out its a common problem.... never overheated the motor, always did all the oil changes... but you can't beat poor engineering with good maintenance..

The seats are made of a dissimilar powdered metal and its pressed into the aluminum head.... because its not bonded over time oil and grease get under the seat and the heat transfer is affected... the seat expands slower than the head... this usually happens on short trips where the head heats up and the valves keep getting cooled by the intake charge so when you take a short jump to the store, open intake valves.... allow the loose seat to just slide out....This info from the guy who did my heads... he used steel inserts and bonded them into the head also went deeper into the head with the seat.

I'm pissed, but its been a long time.... I just got motivated to complain.

I spoke to a class action suit company but after review they were not interested... you basically need deaths or serious threat of death to get a recall from Dodge.

Magnum RT 5.7L Hemi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 91,524 miles

2005 Dodge Magnum R/T 5.7 Hemi with 91,000 miles. Ran beautifully for years. Changed the oil religiously with Valvoline full synthetic 5W-20 as manual requires. Pulled up to the store 3 nights ago - running fine. Went inside for 10 or 15 minutes. Came out to the car - tried to start engine and there was little or no engine compression as the starter spun really fast. Tried to start it again and when it finally fired up it had a terrible miss and it had a horrific metallic knocking sound. I immediately shut off the motor knowing something really bad had just happened.

Praying for the lesser I opened the hood hoping to see a metal coat hanger wrapped up in the serpentine belt. But everything externally on the motor was fine. No leaks. Nothing. So I had it towed to the Dodge dealer. $500 in labor later he says the #3 valve seat came out of the head and dropped into the cylinder and destroyed the piston, cylinder, and the head. They first quoted me $8,500 but have now dropped to $6,500 installed out the door for a Chrysler re-manufactured engine with a warranty 3 year 100,000 mile warranty (why not a FIVE year 100,000 mile warranty Chrysler??)

LOVELY - I am sick to my stomach over this since I have to pay out of pocket for this repair :-(

GOOGLE keywords: "Dodge Hemi 5.7 valve seat failure" to read all about this. A chit-load of people are continuing to experience this problem and NO RECALL. It is an obvious DESIGN FAILURE ON CHRYSLER'S PART.
