CarComplaints.com Notes: This is a classic example of why you should avoid the first model year of a new car. Sure, it's new and shiny but there's going to be some growing pains.

The 2005 Magnum has problems with the gear shifter getting stuck, a shaky and sometimes stalled engine and transmission failure at 75,000 miles.

Let someone else deal with those headaches.

Magnum R/T 5.7L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 153,300 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

'05 Magnum R/T. 153,000 miles. I had to drive into Chicago 30min ride. I was low on fuel and wasn't near a gas station. I got stuck at a train crossing on the south side.. I was able to pull to the right and turn the car off to wait for the train to pass. (About 5/7mins). I tried to start the car but it just cranked. After 10mins it finally started and it sounded terrible. Clicking and clanking. Smoke POURING from the tailpipes. I shut it off and towed it home. I pulled #6 plugs to find them smashed. Insert a long flathead screwdriver down the spark plug hole and it can easily get wedged in the top of the piston. So there's the issue. After net research I found the 5.7 Hemi "Valve" issues.. I only had had car for a year and a half. I went against my better judgement and bought a Chrysler product. I was born in the 70's so I lived through Chryslers '80s & '90s crappy vehicles. I was hoping the 2000s were better. I was wrong. If your looking to buy any Chrysler post '70s.. have a friend hit you in the head with a hammer first. It will be less painful.

Magnum 2.7L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 103,000 miles

I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO AND EVERYTHING WORKED FINE. I HAD IT SMOGGED SHORTLY AFTER WHICH CONFIRMED THIS. HOWEVER, AS SOON AS MY VEHICLE HIT 100,000 MILES, THAT'S WHEN MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON FROM TIME TO TIME. I WOULD HAVE THE VEHICLE TESTED AND THE ISSUE WAS NEVER MY ENGINE. NOW MIND YOU, I DID KEEP FLUIDS IN MY VEHICLE AND A REGULAR OIL CHANGE. SO I WAS FLABBERGASTED AND ON THE FREEWAY WHEN MY CAR JUST LOST POWER. I WAS 100 FT AWAY FROM MY EXIT, AND LUCKILY A CO-WORKER SAW ME AND PUSHED MY CAR AT LEAST TWO BLOCKS INTO A PARKING SPACE AT OUR JOB. HOW EMBARRASSING!

I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED AND LONG STORY SHORT, I THREW A ROD! THERE WAS NO NEED FOR THIS TO HAPPEN. LATER I FIND OUT THAT THIS HAPPENS A LOT TO THIS MODEL WITH THIS ENGINE SIZE! BEWARE. WITH A $8,000 TICKET I HAVE RETIRED THE VEHICLE.

Magnum 5.7L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 42,000 miles

So I purchased a 2005 dodge mangum from a car lot 2010 with 97,000 miles on the motor. The day before my birthday September 14 2013. Went into store came out car won't crank. Toke it dodge dealership for 450$ diagnosis they said one of my spark plugs broke off and destroy my engine wall. For 2700$ , I brought another engine with 1 yr warranty. 31,000 miles on this motor. So for my birthday I put a 1000$ worth of maintenance . Went from NC to FL on the way back of my smooth ride. The car lose power, got off exit loud knocking noise. Repair shop said it throw a rod. All new parts, tune up, oil change. He said he see things like this in Chrysler all the time. Fluids topped all new parts and this still happens. Client tells me to look in a jasper motor. Get quote for jasper motor with 3yrs warranty parts and labor for 6200. He said he had to install 3 engines in a mangum in one year. Until he did a jasper motor. He said they are pain and he see it all the time in dodges. So feed up with a DIRTY DODGE. I WILL , AND DO MEAN NEVER EVER PURCHASE A CHRYSLER AGAIN. EVERY ONE I KNOW THAT HAVE A MANGUM THE MOTOR WENT OUT. RUN RUN RUN

Magnum SXT 3.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 130,000 miles

I got an oil change on my birthday on nov 5 2013 because I purchased my car a year before on the same day.Once I got it back I heard a minor knocking in the engine and I assumed it was minor from the fresh oil change. exactly 2 days later the knocking got worse on my way to work after I heated up the car. I managed to get to work and on the way home it shut down completely. There was stutter in the engine while I was driving down a curved road and eventually the engine shut off leaving me to roll into a ditch almost into a lake if I was going any faster. My car was towed home and was not able to be driven properly since . Liberty mutual who said I had to get full coverage since it was off the lot didn't want to do anything about the dealer only said they can give me a discount off the maintenance and repairs which wouldn't help because they have no problem jacking up the prices on everything ( attempted to charge me 200 to put in a light for my license plate ) and before looking at it every scam artist is telling me to buy another engine. Now that its been so long and I've attempted changing the ignition coils because that's the only problem on the check engine light that comes up and also the timing belt which was perfectly fine I figure I might need a new engine but as a last ditch effort and since this engine already has to come out I figure I might as well take it apart piece by piece and look around before I get another one .

DETAILS: engine does turn on and over but do to having to shut it off and it revving low the battery is dead or is dieing

the car does move once it turns over and barely but can move at a very slow speed , if I press on the gas to much it will shut off or if I stop for to long it will shut off and the battery would need a jump

there is a loud knocking sound that speeds up anytime I press on the gas

It is oil related says a few of the mechanics that looked at it

this is very common, friends with the same car and even strangers with the same car that drove pass me told me they had the same problem and just got rid of theirs

looked at a lot of sites that had complaints some people are saying its the rockers or lifters some saying the oil pump some saying its the cylinders , but this definitely should have been recalled dodge will never get my service again

Magnum SXT

  • 46,500 miles

My 2005 Dodge Magnum started making a noise while driving home from a doctor's appointment so I pulled over immediately and called my husband. He came to the site that I had broke down at and started the car. He immediately heard the knocking and had me push the accelerator to see what it sounded like then. He then had me turn the car off. He said that it sounded like a valve. We took it to our mechanic who listened to it and said that we should call Dodge and see what they had to say because a car with 46500 miles should not have an engine go bad like this. So I did all this and basically they told me that because my husband did all the oil changes and such that they would not even consider helping on any of the cost. I have already been out of a car for almost two weeks and now I have to take it back to our mechanic (he will not charge me nearly as much as a Dodge dealership) to have it fixed which will probably take another week or two. I am also now having to pay for this completely out of my pocket which is just sad because obviously Dodge does not think that anybody can change oil and service their own vehicles except for the people at their dealerships. I do also know that there have been several complaints about the 2005 Dodge Magnums and their engine performance and Dodge is not doing anything about it.
