Went in for $25 oil change. Initial vehicle inspection showed corrosion on all four valve stems. Mechanic asked if I wanted them replaced? Since I was aware of Dodge's issue with them> I agreed. Now $700 lighter due to having to replace all four valve stems plus tire pressure sensors. $275 of that was to replace one chrome rim valued at dealership for $950 new. Reason it need replacing corrosion from valve stems penetrated into rim causing larger than normal valve stem access hole.Basically another example of Dodge "junk" along with the "no-start" issue I have to deal with every so often. Mileage was 89900
According to my mechanic this happens often on Dodge's made prior to 2010. The first broke when I got my tires replaced in December, the second one broke when I got my oil changed a week after that and the third broke this week when I stopped to put air in my ties to get the sensor light to shut off. Thank the lord it did not happen on the road. I am constantly driving my kids to events, practices and games. We are now saving the money to have the 4th replaced. $150 each time is ridiculous as you need the sensor so you aren't stuck with that light on constantly. and the price is more if it happens somewhere else and you have to have it towed. I can not believe that with as many recalls that have happened on this car that we can not get this covered.
I love this vehicle but this has been such a headache and the constant worry of having it blow while driving on the interstate terrifies me, especially now that we have a teen driver in the family. Obviously if mechanics and dealers know this is an issue you would think someone would do something about it.
On our way to the Indy 500 the low tire pressure light came on. My boyfriend pulled over about 10-15 miles from the track and seen that the back tire was flat. He looked for the cause and found no holes no nails nothing. So he pressed on the tire and I told him where the air was coming from. The valve stem had broken and fell inside the tire. Because the tire pressure mount sensor is in the valve stem it is going to cost $200 to replace if we replace it with the toms valve stem. Dodge knows about this issue and there has been no recall for it and it is not covered under warranty. They changed the valve stem in the 2010 model.
First time it was replaced with new TPMS. 4 more times TPMS blew, twice on the interstate which ended in destroyed tires and a tow. Once I came out to the car and the stem was blown off and tire flat. Once it came apart in my hand as I was going to add air. I now have 4 real rubber valve stems and no TPMS, just an annoying dash light that cannot be turned off.
THIS IS ONCE AGAIN A 6MONTH MARK AND ONCE AGAIN BESIDES THE BRAKES AND ROTORS, TIRES AGAIN. YOU CAN READ OF MY OTHER RANTS ON THE BRAKES AND ROTORS. I AM TRYING TO LIST IT ALL SEPARATE IN CASE SOMEONE IS ONLY HAVING THIS PROBLEM. THE TIRE STEM BLEW OUT ON THE INTERSTATE WHILE ON OUR WAY TO DR. WITH A SICK CHILD AND WHEN WE GOT TO THE SIDE MY HUSBAND WENT TO JACK THE CAR UP ONLY TO HAVE THE JACK BEND AND FALL ALMOST CAUSING HIS FOOT TO BE CRUSHED.
I CALLED THE DEALER BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONES WHO PUT THEM ON, COLES IN BLUEFIELD W. VA, AND LEE COLE, THE OWNER'S SON, ASK ME TO TAKE THE CAR TO A KUMO DEALER BECAUSE THERE HAS ONLY BEEN 13K PUT ON THE CAR SINCE THE TIRES WERE PUT ON. HE SAID THERE SHOULD BE A WARRANTY THAT KUMO WILL TAKE CARE OF. MY HUSBAND IS TAKING YET ANOTHER DAY OF HIS TIME TO DEAL WITH ISSUES OF THE CAR THAT WE HAVE ONLY HAD FOR 18 MONTHS. PLEASE, PPL, IF ANYONE WANTS TO HELP FIGHT CHRYSLER IN A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT E-MAIL ME LATOYIA782001@YAHOO.COM THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY THINGS THAT KEEP GOING WRONG WITH THIS CAR. I'm glad I'm not the only one having TPMS tire sensor problems. 2 years after owning the car I went to fill my tires with air (as the low tire pressure light may as well be a permanent sticker as I swear it's always on) and the valve stem literally cracked in half, blew off, and my tire was flat in about 30 seconds. Thank the Lord I wasn't driving!!
Took it to the dealer ... not covered. No biggie as it was just one valve but then he said that will be $200!!!!
So I checked my other 3 valves...ALL CORRODED to the point you wouldn't want to touch them!
Showed the dealer with .. well ... not a smile ... and because I purchased a multi-thousand dollar extended "Service Contract" they replaced the other three valves with a $100 deductible (did NOT reimburse me for the other one I just paid for...really?!?)
That was in 2011. It's now 2013 and (shocker coming up folks!!) I went to put air in my tires to get that damn light off of my dash and presto!! My tire valve cracked in half....AGAIN!!!
Are you kidding me? Again? Checked the others ... all corroded and need replaced. I have to take it to the dealer tomorrow to play their favorite "It's not covered" game.
If you check the forums this is a bigger issue than you think and Dodge has done nothing! There was even an article written about this issue:
If this valve was the old reliable "simple" valves that cost about $2.00 I bet dodge would recall them. However...they cost over $100 a piece plus labor and they make a killing with everyone who keeps needing them replaced.
Does someone need to have this happen while driving and wreck (or worse) before Dodge does something about this? Buyer beware...check your valves and keep telling dodge about them. Please be careful...this should definitely be a recall issue!!
My wife owns a 2009 Dodge Journey with just a little over 28,000 miles on it. On Mothers day she was returning form a short trip to our local Farm Stand, when the right side front tire went flat. After calling me, I found that the valve stem on that tire was broken off to the point that it fell back into the tire.
We have been told that it will cost just around $500.00 to fix the problem with new ones. The dealership does not advise that you replace them with the old fashion rubber stem type valve (that should have been on the stupid car in the first place).
Who has $500.00 just sitting around doing nothing. They act as if it is nothing to drop that kind on money, at a drop of a dime.
Very, Very disappointed in the way Dodge is handling this problem.
Tire sensors nuts that holds them in place fall apart and break off. This causes sensors to loosen and break which then tire goes flat within in 10 seconds. This could cause major accident if you do not understand when a tire is loosing air. Very expensive to fix and should be covered by DODGE if the care about the products they are putting on the road.Cheap materials being used makes a CHEAP vehicle and makes you not buy this make again.
Either your tire pressure will indicate a low tire on your dash, or while checking your tire pressure the threaded part of the valve will break off when applying a pressure gauge to it. After that you are forced to take the tire in for repair because you cannot add air to the tire and you cannot screw the valve cap on because the valve stem is sticking way out and this will make more air escape. All the tire repair places know that these Dodge pressure sensor assemblies are defective and will all fail before too long. The problem is they cost at least $45 for the sensors and another $15 or $20 to get installed. So you're talking at least $240 dollars in repairs for a part Chrysler knows damn well is defective. The dealer just shrugged it off saying I was past the warranty period and quoted me a price of around $75 to replace (one sensor)!!! I've been a loyal Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep customer for at least the last 30 years, but not anymore. When a company refuses to take ownership for a known defect in their equipment I will no longer purchase another one of their products!!! GM will get my business from this day forward!!
tires are always losing air, when you go to put air in them the valve blows off. the valve shoots off like it was fired from a gun. this is also a concern because the valve is rusting off from sensor. i am afraid that this might happen when driving on highway.
this is quite a concern because the tire goes flat in approx. 10 sec. and could cause a serious accident.
3 valves have been replaced. what can be done about this? why are the valves made from thin metal that rusts and breaks?
i am almost scared to drive this vehicle
