This 2009 Dodge Journey RT was purchased brand new in 2009. Since 2014, this car has gone in every year for heater issues. The heater core was replaced in 2014 at a cost to me for $1300. Since then, the car has gone back in for the same problem. The core was flushed again in 2015, 2016 and now they tell me I need a new heater core at the cost of $1300. Dodge issued a recall for the heater core in the Dodge Avenger. Dodge needs to issue a recall on the heater core for the Journey. This is definitely a design flaw and people are being charged over and over for the repair. Never in any of my other cars that I have owned have I had to replace anything for the heater. I am tired of being ripped off. Dodge should eat the cost for the heater core repairs.

Took car to dealer twice. 1st was 11/4/15, Heater electrical checkout of heater components - all passed. Dealer recommended flushing the radiator and replacing with new antifreeze. Dealer said old fluids were very clean, but did have some evidence of foreign pieces of rubber substance. After service, heater worked slightly better, but still blew cold air on some of the settings. Cost $198.00. Returned to dealer on 11/17/15 for another look at heater problem. They had car 2-3 hours and said it looked like the heater core was partially plugged. Estimate cost to pull heater box, replace heater core and re-install unit would be $1,100.00. No charge for last dealer inspection work - that was nice of them!

I'm not a mechanic, but owned several cars over my life time and never had one plug up - one did leak in early 80's. I usually have engines flushed & re-filled with new anti-freeze every 3-4 years as we live in the NW with 4-seasons. Good heaters and AC necessary for comfort.

Here are my thoughts:

1. I believe the p/s heater deflector door is not in proper position for heat, or not working at all. Dealer said computer shows it opening and closing on screen. Frankly, I like computers, but have seen them fail before.

2. Assuming the heater core is partially plugged (like dealer suggests), why then does it blow hot air on drivers side only? The heater core is a single stage unit and serves both sides of the car. Strange????

Anyone got suggestions for a low cost fix without ruining something? We really like the car and the way it handles, so if it can be fixed @ reasonable cost, we will do it.
