CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

I was driving the vehicle when I heard a metal on metal grinding noise. Before I could pull the car out of traffic the car stalled, the vehicle became almost impossible to steer. I got it pulled over to the side of the road & have been unable to start it since. I was told just today that the water pump broke into pices, & the timing chain needs to be replaced. I called the Chrysler Corp. & inspite of the fact that this car has less than 68,000 miles on it, they informed me that I am responsible for the entire $1,500+ repair bill.

The vehicle was towed to the dealership who determined the engine had to be replaced because there were no parts for the 2.7 long block engine. An independent mechanic also made the same diagnosis. The manufacturer was contacted, and concurred with the dealership about the engine replacement due to non-availability of the engine components. The contact expressed concern about the responsibility of the manufacturer not complying with the obligation to provide the necessary parts to perform the vehicle repairs.

Our 2001 Dodge Intrepid ran good until about a couple weeks ago. It just started to rattle and tick. It sounded like it was knocking. We had several people look at it and they didn't have a clue. Then when my husband was on his way home from work it just died in the middle of the road. We finally got it home and we noticed that the spark plug on the left rear was in pieces like it blew up. I looked it up online and turns out tons of people had the same problem. There is a default in the engine and Chrysler knows all about it and doesn't care. My husband is military and had no way to get to work. Is there a lawsuit against them" can you help? what should we do" I can't attend school anymore or work and my stranded with a baby what if he gets sick and has to go to the hospital. Please help. Thank you.

My 2.7L 2001 Dodge Intrepid ran fine Saturday morning. Saturday it was very sluggish and began "ticking". when we checked, it had no oil. There was never white smoke, no dripping oil under the car, no indicator light when you were driving down the road, other than an occasional flickering when the car was in idle. Dealer is now saying the engine in junk and it will take $5200+ to fix. Book value doesn't support repair. Only 78,000 miles.
