CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.
NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.
Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.
This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

first of all i would like to say i proudly own a 1998 intrepid a 2000 intrepid and a 2001 Chrysler concord, all have the dependable 2.7liter engine! and i say this because all three of these cars have never let me down! maybe all you complainers should change your god damn freakin oil every 2000 miles or better yet STOP USING SYNTHETIC OIL!!!!! i change mine every 2000 miles using 5w30. my concords 2.7 liter now has 194,600 miles on it and still going strong! now you can say oh its just luck, hmmm........... not at all because like i said i own three. so some of you should just fess up and admit that you let your regular oil changes become not so regular! or maybe your cars previous owner never changed the oil? all i know is that i have two intrepids and one concord all with 2.7 liter engines and the only thing i have to do is a 2000 mile oil change and some other minor stuff. and i will buy another Chrysler vehicle, we can say this and that but really don't all cars have problems? and of course any idiot knows if you don't change your oil regularly it's going to create oil sludge and thats why Chrysler is turning down any engine claim that has to do with (oil sludge) because it shows fault on the consumers part! good luck to you all and i highly recommend that with your next vehicle CHANGE YOUR OIL!! NO SYNTHETICS!
