CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • 106,000 miles
I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that at approximately 80,000 miles the cam censor went out, then about 10,000 miles later then crank censor went out. When the car had 106,000 miles on it my wife was driving home from work when she heard loud knocking coming from the engine, took it to a repair shop to find out the engine seized due to sludge. This car has had the oil changed every 3,000 miles. The mechanic said it would about $4,000 to replace. Now I come to find out that Chrysler knows they had a problem with these engines and won't fix them. I bought this car new and never expected that Chrysler won't stand behind their product.

My daughter owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with the 2.7L engine. It was acting up on her and on her way to the dealer it stopped running. After their mechanics worked for two hours just to get it into the shop they said the engine was seized and she would need a new one.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 87,000 miles
Dodge 2.7L timing chain broke due to engine oil sludge. 87,000 miles on the car with regular oil changes. Unfortunately with this engine it doesn't matter how often you change the oil. It's going to blow on you anyway. If this has happened to you contact impartial services group (isg) at (866) 332-3746. Apparently they will work with Chrysler Corp to get you a settlement out of court. I am in the process now and hope to get about $1800 out of them. It's still far short of the $3000 for a new engine. Also, I have learned that the 2.7 can be replaced with the 3.2 which my mechanic is looking into. If you put the 2.7 back in it will just happen again because it is a design defect with the engine. Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 73,945 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

There have been several problems with my 2000 Intrepid 2.7L. I have had to replace all the door lock motors at different times, starting all the way back from 1/8/04 and the final one was just this month (February.) I was having an issue with the car stalling out while I was driving it. Some times it would start back up while it was still coasting, other times it would take a long time before it would start again, leaving me sitting on the side of the road. When hooked up to a diagnostic machine it would not show what caused the malfunction. My mechanic had to change random censors until we found the correct one. Which turned out to be the crank sensor. This problem was occurring around February/March of 2007, with only 60,121 mileage when the first one was replaced. Then this past Wednesday, 2/27/08, the engine started to make a knocking sound. We thought maybe it was due to the extremely cold weather we were having. It did not due it after the car was heated up. When I was driving home from picking up my kids today, Friday 2/29/08, the engine started knocking very loudly and lost power. I did make it to my driveway but just barely. I still owe quite a bit for the car and now I don't have anything to drive and can't even trade the vehicle in. After searching the internet to try to find a replacement engine I have found that this is a very common thing with this engine. I have 73,945 miles on the car.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 81,033 miles
At 81,000 miles, the vehicle timing chain broke on highway causing it to lose all power, including power steering, and making it difficult to safely pull over. The owner's manual says to replace the timing chain at 100,000 miles. And the oil has been changed every 3,000 miles. According to my mechanic it is definitely a defect of the engine as he noted evidence of sludge build-up.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 57,000 miles
I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that has 57,000 miles on it. I left work at 12pm on 1/4/08 to run an errand. I pulled into the parking space and my car was clanking under the hood. I shut the car off, ran in to complete my errand, came back out to my car and it would not turn over. I had my car towed to the mechanic and was 45 minutes late back to work. The mechanic ran extensive diagnostic tests and the conclusion was engine sludge. The mechanic stated "this is the worst engine I have ever seen". the mechanic had me come to the chop to visually see the sludge. I was shocked at the sight of sludge buildup. After extensive research, this is a known issue with the Chrysler/Dodge 2.7 engine and there are thousands of complaints on the internet for the same exact problem. Dodge refuses to admit to a manufacture defect and refuses to fix or assist in the replacement of an engine.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

Purchased a 2000 Dodge Intrepid new from dealer. Take amazing great care of my car and have records to prove that. Just hit 59,000. Miles and my motor blew up. Im now looking at spending $4000. To replace motor or purchase a new car. Listening to all the problems with these motors that are well documented I have decided to purchase a new car a Honda. I will never again buy american made. How can they be let to get away with this. Every consumer should be compensated for there lose. We all do the right thing, pay our taxes, our monthly car payments with high interest rates, but when it comes to crappy products we just have to eat it. That's why there people out there trying to beat the system. I say then go for it. I want $3500 for my useless car. That's what my book value is. I also want $3500 I have to spend for the down payment for my new car and two weeks of begging family and friends for rides, and all the stress related to this mess. Someone needs to take responsibility for these poorly made motors. They know there crap and there aloud to get away with it.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles
2000 Chrysler Intrepid with less than 70,000 miles used primarily by my wife for work. (85 miles per day). Car started to knock. We brought it to the dealership for investigation and were told we had an engine failure. Dealership replaced small block with what I was told as being a new as an after market part. We started to have oil changes done at dealership only every 3,000 miles(although owners manual states 7,000 for our the type of driving. At less than 40,000 miles the engine started to knock again. Dealership would not stand behind product or repair again. I brought it to a local repair shop that was recommended to me by a friend in the business. This repair shop has had some luck with repairing the problem. Unfortunately for me not this time. I have contacted Chrysler several time with same results as mentioned, service not performed by dealership to bad, I was also told this by dale frank the service manager at the dealership. I have all my vehicles service at or before 3,000 miles. I fine it very absurd that the spark plug change is at 100,000 miles when this engine has no change of ever seeing that number of miles.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 69,455 miles
While driving my 2000 Dodge Intrepid to work on a busy interstate, I noticed a loud knocking noise coming from the engine and the accelerator not responding properly. The engine then started bucking and racing while I tried to wrestle it to the next exit. The car got as far as the end of the exit ramp before it stopped running and would not restart. The vehicle was then towed to a local repair shop. Later that day, I was informed by the owner of the shop that the timing chain broke, resulting in bent valves and the engine needing replacement at a cost of approximately $4000!! I just finished paying off the vehicle in September. With only 69,000 miles and the manufacturers routine maintenance schedules adhered to, this vehicle's engine should not have failed this early in the game.

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that I have w/ a 2.7 engine and the engine seized/locked up on me and the heat had went out on it right before the engine seized up. I took care of the vehicle and had no problems until then. My vehicle is nice looking in and out and I cannot afford another engine for this car so it's sitting there behind my house and I have no transportation. I paid a great deal for this car and didn't have any problems w/ it until it seized and it seized up at 97,000 miles! this car is a great disappointment for me and something needs to be looked into the problems everyone has been having out of these vehicles. I ran off the road and into a small tree. It makes me and my family/friends not ever want to buy another Dodge/Chrysler vehicle. Please look into this for me.
