CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

Several problems with my 1999 2.7 liter Intrepid. First, problems with transmission shifting hard. Sent to dealer and diagnostics came back 'within parameters'. told it must be how we drive it. Since then, transmission would not shift between 2/3 gears. Left me stranded out of town. Had to replace the control module twice ($35 part). Keep a spare in the glove box just in case. Second problem, a clunking sound and ticking noise when turning steering wheel in either direction. Took to an independent repair shop, they wouldn't touch it. Have not had this problem corrected or seen by dealer. However, I have seen many tsb's on your website concerning this issue. Third, engine starting making a banging sound at about 126K. Had to have the engine replaced (bought a remanufactured engine) at a cost of $5000, was told something in the bottom end went. Couldn't afford to buy new car and have car payment. Only had 6 more payments to go. Was also told that this was common with these engines. Why is this engine still on the market if it has soooo many problems?

My Dodge Intrepid showed no signs of any problems, timely oil changes, but on this early morning while driving to work on the expressway. The oil light came on and then the check engine light and then sudden engine shut down, lucky for me that there wasn't any traffic on the road or I would have been in a serious car crash. Car towed to auto shop. They said that this type of Dodge engine has a serious defect with the engine. The tensioner oil port is too narrow and it gets plugged with oil sludge which causes engine failure.

At about 60,000 miles I notice a ticking sound in the engine I took it in to the local Dodge dealership and it was determined to be a lower bearing noise that would ultimately ruin the engines. As the noise got worse I feared driving it anymore. My maintenance contract did not cover engine cost but only affected bearings and this would not be covered by any dealer or manufacture warranty. I subsequently replaced the engine with a used engine which lasted one year and left me stranded beside the road requiring a tow and my vehicle has sat for 2 years with the cost of engine replacement almost doubling. I think an engine recall is in order as I have experienced several; people stopping to ask if the Intrepid is for sale because they have one with a bad engine.

Vehicle, a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 83000 miles died twice while driving on a highway. First incident on 12/25/04. Vehicle was towed to garage where my mechanic said 3 of the plugs were fouled due to catalytic converters being bad. Cats were replaced in late may after vehicle was off the road for 5 months. Second incident happened on 6/7/05. Same problem, vehile just died on highway. I understand that there is a history of this problem due to engin oil sludge buildup. Is this true" is it also true that chrystler is doing nothing about the problem"

My wife was driving along with my diabetic mother and our 11 month old son to the louisville airport hours away* to pick up her family, who was flying in for a visit. Without warning the motor blew. They were lucky enough to have a state trooper happen along who gave them a ride back into town, *they only made it approximately 25 miles from home*. we only had the car for 5 months and had never had any problems with it, nor any indications something was going to happen. The car has approximately 80,000 miles on it, and I realize it is passed it's "36000 mile warranty" but with all the engine failures this 2.7 has had it is shameful! I am just grateful the state police came by when he did, as it was a hot day out, and they were on the cumberland parkway, meaning no where to walk to for help.

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The vehicles are just no good. The 2.7 motors in those cars are blowing up, the timing chains break. You can't find other motors to put in the cars because all the motors are just not good. Most of the people I know have just sent their cars to the junk yard for scraps.

I bought this car from my mother which owned the car for little over a year. Oil changes and maintenence was on a regular schedule. On my way home from work about a week ago as I was changing lanes the engine suddenly locked up taking away my brakes and power steering and locking up the transmission while doing about 60 mph on the highway changing lanes. I was lucky to avoid a major accident and was able to slide to the side of the road.

I bought a used 1999 Dodge Intrepid 10-01-03 with 74570 miles. In February 2005 the oil light started coming on when I came to a complete stop. I contacted Dodge and was told there might be a sludge problems and they could try to correct it but would make no promises. I contacted rt clapp where they said that they could work on the car but with that engine it would be better if I could trade it. I would be pouring money down the drain. I called jasper engines and they said they made many rebuilt engines for the 2.7 model and that would be $4200. I have read on several websites that this 2.7 engine has many safety issues. I am disabled and cannot afford to trade the car. I am terrified to drive it and it has been sitting in my driveway for over a month now. If I were driving it and it seized up on my I am afraid I would have a heart attack. One if my disabilities is congestive heart failure. I only put 6800 miles on this car in the 18 months that I have owned it. The engine has not failed yet but the oil light coming on when coming to a stop when the oil is full is one of the first indications that the engine is about to go. I wanted to lodge my complaint against Chrysler for making a bad engine and not doing anything about it to protect the safety of the cars owners. Driving on the interstate and having the engine blow is one day going to make a hugh accident but it will not be me because I am too terrified to ever drive this car again and could not try to sell a lemon to another individual.

Nov.2004 2.7L engine in my 1999 Dodge Intrepid failed at 99K. I took the vehicle to crown Dodge to check what the problem was and found that the engine was dead and it had a timing issue. Spoke with an service advisor about some recalls from 2002 and same advised me that my vehicle did not follow the guidelines due to the miliage. Also stated that Dodge would not help me with this problem and that the recommended oil type is a 5W 30 oil and this was the only oil that crown Dodge uses on all oil changes unless other oil is requested. The other problems that contributing to the engine is the oil galley and there was a recall on this in 2002 as well as oil light flickering problem was another recall from Dodge. I am writing to try to get some information on any action I can take against Chrysler for my engine failure. I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with around 81,000 miles on it. I recently was deployed between late October through January. Soon after leaving, my car engine began knocking very badly and the engine quit while my wife was driving. This occurred while she was traveling with our 3 children"including a new born".at around 45 mph. After getting a ride back to our house my wife contacted the local Dodge dealer and was informed that the engine was shot and that one of the rods had gone. They also explained that the only fix was a new engine. Which varied in price from $3200-$9000. I have been told the same excuse by several people also that it was my fault and that I was probably not changing the oil as required. Since this was our only form of transportation I had to return from my deployment to assist my family. Now I feel that since this is a known problem Chrysler should have to finally accept their failure and do something about it. I would appreciated and assistance and information for who or where I need to contact. I have already contacted a local news Agency and they requested that I contact them back and let them knw if I do get assistance or not so that they can get involved. While driving my Dodge Intrepid home the engine quit causing me to pull over to the side of the road with no steering and very little braking. I was able to jump start the engine and begin my trip home again. The engine quit again and had trouble steering car off the road with also no brakes. Now the engine will not start due to being locked up. I have changed the oil regularly and maintained the car in good condition. I have had to replace the transmission sensors at 50,000 miles due to failure. The manufacturer service mechanics knew exactly what the problem was when described over the phone about the transmission and the engine. The transmission had a failure again at 100,000 miles. This is terrible for a 99 model car that has only a 100,000 miles. The engine is locked up and now I have no transportation to travel back and forth to work. I have more problems with this car since I bought it.

I was driving on an errand to tucson Arizona which is 65 miles from my home. I stopped at a stop light and the car engine died on me in the middle of a busy intersection without even a warning light coming on. I do regular maintanence on the vehicle, and do predrive checks on the vehicle before I go on long distance trips. The dealership where I bought the vehicle used from told me it would cost $6300 to replace the engine. I do not have $6300 to replace an engine in a vehicle worth about $7000.

I also own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with the notorious 2.7 almost blown engine, due to oil sludge. The was well maintained with regular oil changes. The car has only 76K miles. For a couple of months the car would sound like a diesel for a very short time and disappear. I called the dealer and inquired if there had been any similar complaints or problems. They replied they knew of none. I even had the car in another repair shop one day and they did not know what could have caused the sound I complained about, because it disappeared before I got there. Just a couple of weeks ago the sound reappeared suddenly after 4 months of nothing. The shop owner could not believe his ears when I drove up left the car running and went in to get him. He found that the hydraulic tensioner that holds the timing chains in place needed replaced, but when he took the front cover off the motor he found it filled with sludge. I was lucky that the motor had not blown yet, but I face the expense of having it rebuilt or replaced. I still have the car, but I had to go replace it with another car. This was an added expense I was not planning on. R miller, Delaware.

1999 Dodge Intrepid stops on freeway with almost no warning, just the yellow caution light about 30 seconds before it stops and a noise from the engine. Checked the enginge and there was very little oil. Told the engine needed to be replaced at a cost ot 8,000. I had this car serviced 6,000 mi. Before at the dealer and filled with oil. Have not had it fixed as this is to much money for me to pay to have it fixed.
