CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

Intrepid 6-cyl

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

First engine failed at 84367 miles on 03/18/03 and was covered by extended warranty. Rebuilt long block was installed. Second engine has now failed in September of 2006 with 154004 miles on the car. Less than 70,000 miles on the second engine. Timing chain has failed and is sticking through the valve cover. All of a sudden started rattling and then just died. It seems as if these engines are only good for 70-80K and they are done.

Intrepid 6-cyl

I was driving and all of a sudden something started bonging and I looked down to notice that the check engine light was light up and then the check oil light came on. I was trying to pull over so that I could get out of traffic but the steering wheel froze up and made it extremely difficult to steer so that I could get out of traffic. Finally, after trying to steer the dead car out of traffic I called aaa and they towed it to the mechanic who has come to the conclusion it is the engine. It has been sitting there ever since due to the amount of money it will cost me to fix. After doing research regarding issues with the Dodge Intrepid I have come to see that I am not the only one having this problem. Dodge has known about this issue and refuses to send out a recall. I find that this could be extremely fatal depending on where a person is.

I am one of hundreds who have had this 2.7 DOHC give out. Dailmer Chrysler says that it is due to neglect but I would say with all the complaints I see on the internet that their is a severe issue that needs to be looked into. It is not just the 1999 2.7 engine their is a few years after 1999 and before 1999 that I have seen complaints about. We need your help in forcing them to do a recall on them. Yes I purchased the car used but still 98000 miles and motor gives out.

While driving down the highway my 1999 Dodge Intrepid suddenly lost power almost causing an accident. Had the car checked out and the timing chain failed causing damage to the valves and the cylinder. The price to fix this is over $4000.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission

Without warning my 2.7L engine seized up while I was driving causing a complete loss of control I hit a concrete post. Highway patrol came but did not press charges against me for property damage. This is a dangerous but well documented design flaw of this particular engine and I hope I can recover enough money from the Texas based impartial services group to buy a new engine because I love my Dodge Intrepid. I'm only 18 years old and can't afford another vehicle. Just two days after I bought this Intrepid - while driving on the highway all the gauges including the speedometer failed and I had to pay $1414.32 to have a new computer installed at my local Dodge dealership.

I was driving to work one evening when the car just lost all power and died. I was almost hit by another car. A few young men had to help me push my car on the side of the road. I work third shift and it was late at night so I was very scared. I got a tow truck to tow the car back to the house and the next day I had a mechanic checked it out and he said the engine was no good. The car only had 63,000 miles and it was serviced on time. I got a second mechanic to check it and the result was the same.

: the contact stated while driving 40 mph down a street, the engine stalled without warning. The engine did not restart and was towed to an independent repair shop who determined the timing chain needed to be replaced. After the repair, the engine stalled again without warning. Upon further inspection, the engine was filled with sludge. The engine was rebuilt which corrected the problem. The manufacturer was not alerted.

My 1999 Dodge Intrepid just quit running in traffic on the freeway. The engine apparently has failed and needs to be replaced. This is after over $1,000 in repairs and routine maintenance on it since June 1, 2006. The engine had approx 80,000 miles.

Jul 282006

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 74,000 miles
Bought 3 years ago used, it had emissions issues with the original engine. At about 74,000 miles the engine block cracked. Engine design does not allow for it to cool itself properly while running and results in the oil burning within before the engine can circulate it which finally results in the "sludge" that so many owners have a problem with and only perseverant the high heat issue as less oil is circulated to cool the engine. My engine's block cracked providing evidence of the engine getting too hot with no gauge warning of overheating because it is "overheating" within the system before it gets to the sensor etc, therefore it is not a poor maintenance issue but poor design and manufacturing. With a "rebuilt" engine it shakes, hesitates and emits smoke with clean oil and filter and no evidence of sludge within!! now at under 96000 original miles and 22000 rebuilt engine the A/C coil has busted under the high pressure caused by the high engine temperature. The A/C pressure varies with engine pressure which varies with engine heat (still no overheating warning on the gauges). It is only addressed now that it is summer and too hot to drive without A/C. unfortunately because of the design it will cost around $850 to replace a $80-120 part because the entire dash/firewall must come out along with many other components to get to it (and then those reinstalled afterward). The battery was sucked of power around this time and the motors controlling the windows & mirrors have broken. The keyless entry system has gone as well.

2.7 L V-6 Dodge Intrepid: This engine is beyond words to describe a horrible design flaw. The engine's oil light flickers and now the motor produces a noise like the lifters are not getting oil. The high brass of D/C will blame every customer of neglect and oil sludge rather than notice a huge pattern of these 2.7 V6 cars being bashed by numerous people all having the same problem. The 2.7 V6 is junk and @ 56+ miles it should not have this problem. I guess I'll post it on ebay like all the other Dodge Intrepids with a blown 2.7 liter engine. I suggest a google search and just read what others have to say about this crappy built motor. I have actually thought about painting a lemon on each side of this car mentioning my engine troubles within each lemon. I will never own a Dodge again!
