CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

Catastrophic failure of the engine while driving 65 mph on the Ohio turnpike. Told by two different garages that the engine is blown, rod irreparably bent, must be replaced and that this is a well known problem with the 2.7 engines and that Dodge will do nothing about it. Told by 5 different mechanics to junk it, not to bother replacing it because they'll just have to put another faulty 2.7 engine in the car. No way this engine should go out in a dangerous situation like highway driving! the car is in my yard right now.

We've only had the car for 10months now and already its a piece of junk. While driving my kids to daycare one day the car just stopped. The steering wheel wouldn't move and the brakes wouldn't work. My husband pulled into a parking lot and put on the emergency brake. He tried to start it up and it wouldn't. he looked under the hood and checked the oil thinking maybe that was the problem. He tried to start it again after he saw there was oil there and the timing chain jump up and broke right threw the covering. We didn't have aaa so his brother called them and had them tow it to a mechanic. That's when we found out the valves were bent causing the motor to be useless. The whole cost of the repairs were an estimate of $3000. We called the finance company and they told us to first call the dealer we bought the car from and they should be able to trade it in for another vehicle. The dealership said it wasn't their problem and that we should have taken the extended warranty. My husband asked why they didn't offer it and they stated they didn't have to. This is very hard on us being that we both work fulltime and have two small children. We can not afford to get this car repaired and keep paying on a car that doesn't serve us any value.

Driving back from the store and the car started jerking back and forth and then just stopped. Called for a tow. The mechanic said the oil pump stopped and by the sound that the car was making that it had lost a connecting rod bearing. But couldn't be sure without ripping the motor apart.

We have a 99 Dodge Intrepid and at around 80,000 the engine gave out due to sludge buildup even though we had regular oil changes. We had to replace the engine at $5000. While researching the internet, we found that there are websites dedicated to the 99 Intrepid all with the same issue. Why are they not recalled?

I was driving to work when all of a sudden the car jerked real hard and the engine light came on and the car completely lost power. I coasted over to the side of the highway and tried restarting the car but it would not restart. Had car towed to dealership where they found my camshaft was not turning and my timing chain had broke and they were pretty certain it had done extensive damage to the engine. They told me it could be well over $5,000 to get fixed and just for them to even start to investigate how bad the damage was it would cost me at least $600. I did have to pay them $102 just for a diagnostic test plus two tow bills. My car only had 85,000 miles on it! what a rip-off! the comment section on the receipt from the dealer said no promises--well no kidding they knew what was going on.

I was driving on the highway and just as I was getting on the bridge, the engine on my Dodge Intrepid malfunctioned. My husband is a certified mechanic and he kept the maintenance up on my vehicle. We were told by the dealership that the sludge buildup was due to us not changing the oil at every 3000 miles. We were told that the cost to repair this problem would start at about $4500.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • 110,000 miles
I would like to file a complaint about the 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The engine blew out at 110000, in perfect condition, I had the oil changed every 300 miles, and had recently just flushed the transmission fluid. I kept it in peak condition. One day while driving to work it made loud noises. I was close to my mechanics shop and just drove it there. As I pulled in I heard a loud pop and the mechanics confirmed that the engine blew out, and how horrible this engine was. Would like to receive some type of reimbursement for this. I heard there was a class action lawsuit, which I would surely like to sign up for, any insight would be helpful.

I bought a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 86140 miles. Drove 14 miles and oil light came on and noise started. I pulled over, checked engine oil level, and it was full. I towed the vehicle home and there it sits. I found many concerns on the net about the Dodge Intrepid,1999 as a all but 1 test a.S.E technician I pulled the valve covers off and found sludge in areas. I was still wondering if there will be a recall, so I haven't done anything yet.

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. While driving at 55 mph the vehicle began to vibrate and produced a knocking noise. The contact stated that acceleration decreased and the engine stalled. The check engine light has been intermittently illuminating for approximately one year. The vehicle was brought to local mechanics on several occasions, and the vehicle was never diagnosed as having engine failure. During this time, the mechanics replaced the cam shaft and the crank shaft regulator. The mechanic stated that the engine was breaking down, and the crank shaft seal was deteriorating. The vehicle had undergone routine maintenance since the time of purchase. The failure mileage was 140,000.

I heard a knocking noise. So I took it back to the place I had my oil changed at, as I was turning into the the side street a belt broke. After my car sat for three nights on the parking lot of this business, it was then towed to the shope. It was then I was informed that I was not the first person who has had sludge build upthis. Engine needs to be replaced, due to sludge build up. My car is now sitting in my drive way, because I can not afford to pay 5,000 + to have my car fixed.I have no car to drive back and forth to school. Now I feel so disquestedwhen I think about this car. I think Chrysler should at least give me half, considering they were aware of this problem

I purchased my 1999 Dodge Intrepid a 1 1/2 ago with 80,000 miles. About 3 months after purchase the cooling fans went and had to replace $400. Then about 2 months ago the crank shaft sensor went. Now the engine is gone. Oil light flickering on and off, check oil level is fine. Went from a tapping noise in engine to the engine sounding like its going to blow up. Cant drive piece of junk and still owe $7,000 on it.

Driving home from work @ midnight when the heater started to emit cold air. Car seemed to be running fine. No noises heard, temp gauge was low. Pulled over to check for leaks or any other obvious problem, none apparent. Continued to drive for several miles to get close to home, suddenly the temp gauge went all the way up to hot and the car started to fill with smoke, pulled to side of road immediately and engine quit. On country road, had to walk to get help. Had car towed to repair shop where I was told a bearing was spun and the engine was blown. When I asked for an estimate to repair the station manager stated it would cost over $5,000 to repair and would be cheaper to look for a used engine but could not guarantee that the same problem would not occur. Still owed approx. $5,000 on loan. Had to trade it in and refinance with another vehicle.

While my cousin had borrowed the car, the car stalled and he could not get it started again. The car was towed to a mechanic and the mechanic did say that with the horrendous noise the car was making, that the engine would need to be either rebuilt, or replaced, based on what he called a rod knock. When I had another mechanic look at the car, he proceeded to say the same thing. This is a car that in 7 years of me owing it, I put on less than 70,000 on the car in that time. I have always done oil changes regularly and took good care of the car, to now have it sitting in a driveway, unable to start !
