This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Very loud knocking from the engine occurred then the engine died lifters were replaced because they were collapsed and knocking still occurs and mechanic is now checking into the timing chain.
Driving in morning rush hour traffic with my young grandchildren the Dodge Intrepid I was driving died. The 2.7 engine appears to be garbage. I would like some help..
While driving there was a rattling noise coming from the engine. Then, the vehicle stalled while approaching an intersection. Black smoke came out of the exhaust. Vehicle was towed to a dealership, who indicated that timing chain and water pump blewout. This was a common failure with these vehicles.
July 2002, engine making noises. Dealer says don't know would have to explore. Insurance wouldn't pay unless engine was already failed. August 2002 engine failure 5000 miles past insurance limit. Cursory check shows fluids all okay.
The engine is failing, smoking. Upon investigation, it has been found that this is common in 2.7 liter vehciles of this model. In other words, this engine is a lemon. I have also noted that the airconditioning has failed and I will also have to have this repaired. There is also a problem with the ignition that I haven't figure out yet. The power mirror on the driver's side doesn't work and the speaker system has little to be desired. The 3.2 liter engines fair much better after talking with many mechanics, who consequentially are surprised there hasn't been a recall on the 2.7 liter 1998 engines.

Two times in the last 1.5 years, while I was stopped in traffic (with my foot on the brake) the engine suddenly accelerated! in both cases, I was stopped at a traffic light behind another car. The reving of the engine took me by surprise both times, but I managed to push the brake pedal hard enough so that I did not hit the car in front of me. I shifted into neutral and shut off the engine. It started up and in neither instance did I have another re-occurrence that day.
Engine had been knocking for approx. 2 months. My mechanic said not a problem eventually failed. Took car to dealer and they told me it had dropped a main bearing. Required a new short engine.
2.7L V6 engine has a knocking while running. Vehicle been to the dealer on three occasions and the problem is still occurring. Consumer has taken vehicle to be fixed in which they informed consumer that it was a bad camshaft sensor. The problem reoccured after the fix. Consumer was informed to take the vehicle to another repair shop to have the defect fixed. The problem is still occuring.
Dealer aligned vehicle moving rack and pinion steering over last year. Since then the car pulls left. Took it back twice to the same location, had it aligned at two tire shops numerous times and am always told it is aligned to manufacturers specifications. I have a continous pull to the left which gets wrose at higway speeds. Dealer told me tires and had four different sets puts on from different manufactuers and still the same problem and am always told it is fine. The car is not fine and is unsafe and bumpy roads besides hard on my suspension and made it very difficult to control on the last 3 snow storms we had here the past couple of weeks. I am sick of the run around and each time it costs me because it is not a covered item even though I have a 7 year 70,000 miles warranty. The engine has leaked since I bought her and there again am told it is fine. She has been to 3 different Dodge dealerships and am always told the same thing. The engine leaks and 2 weeks ago smelled something burning and found that it was engine oil all over the bottom of the engine and exhaust but told she was fine when it was in the day before at the dealership. I am tired of this car and can not afford to continously repair it knowing they did something to her and will not honor the repairs. I need your help.
