The contact owns a 1995 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 65 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle did not stop and crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The driver's side air bag did not deploy. The passenger side air bag deployed, but there was no passenger. There were no injuries. Police report number: 19-341341 was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent lot. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 113,000.
Since owning the 1995 Dodge Intrepid we purchased brand new, these are the problems experienced since owning and the problems being experienced now. We have had steering problems which required the power steering pump to be replaced, also some arm had to be replaced due to the right front wheel wobbling. Our electric locks have engaged as if holding the switch for a couple of seconds on the passenger side and the driver side. Never was fixed due to dealer not duplicating. Our ac/heat electronic controls stuck and would not respond to any commands and constantly was blowing hot air, pulling fuse was only remedy. Electronic gauges will not always show correct information ie. Fuel level, temp, fuel used, compass, ..etc, turning car on/off will usually correct it. Our fuel rails has been replaced under warranty recall, but I still will smell fuel inside. Our passenger side air bag is warped. Our headlights will not come on at times and even go out while driving. Flashing high/low beam steering column switch will usually make them come on. Our most recent problem and the state our vehicle is in right now is smoke is coming from the steering column and it is very hot and I believe a fire is trying to start. The car is parked at the location this started at and is not being driven.
The air bag diagnostic module failed causing all the instrument panel gauges and displays to go dead, the air bag light comes on and problems with the climate control system.

I had a frontal collision with a telephone pole at 40 mph with no deployment of airbags. Neck and back injuries. Also, there are apparently two recalls on my vehicle that I have never received notification on.
Air bags sensor light intermittently would come on and stay on when vehicle is started. Dealer inspected vehicle and informed consumer that no problem could be found. Also, since transmission had been rebuilt. The control panel failed to operate, and gear shift failed to light up. While driving on highway at appoximately 60-65 mph, transmission appeared to downshift to low and all lights would go out. Dealer/manufacturer notified, and problem still exits. Can NHTSA help in this matter.
I am under five feet tall and read about the dangers of the air bags. I would like mine to be disconnected and the Dodge dealership says they can't do it. Where do I go to have this done" I have to have the seat pushed real close to the dashboard in order to reach the pedals. It would not be feasible to have a pedal extender installed as my husband drives the car also and is six feet tall.what can I do" I dont wear my seatbelt because I am afraid I cant get out from under the airbag if I was to wreck! I cannot trade in my car but I was not told about the dangers! please help me. Concern of safety of short person and air bag; and concern about air bag safety (other than short person) added on 09-07-1999.
