I curse Dodge Automatic Transmissions from here to eternity, I might not even own an automatic ever again because of this. If you read closely in the owners manual, it wqill tell you that when the transmission "senses" problems, it shifts into 2nd gear so you can limp it to your nearest service station without further damaging the transmission. I had found a really good mechanic that told me at 150,000 miles that the tranny was shot, but there was a temporary fix. TEMPORARY - Find yourself a can of NON CHLORINATED Brake parts cleaner, and spray into the Trans. Fluid check chute for 3-5 seconds with the car off and in park. Simple as that, start the car, and put it in drive and it should shift smoothly for a while. This worked rather effectively for about 30,000 miles, and after that, it started getting progressively worse, to the point where this trick no longer works for me. So I stopped dumping my money into can after can of cleaner and gave up. Now the car is parked and being sold as a parts vehicle. A car isnt a car without a tranny. Dodge can suck it, they did everything else right in that car, no complaints whatsoever. The 3.3L Engine is STILL in excellent running condition, and I find it rather sad because the car is still a really good vehicle. Cheap ass transmission parts, German Engineered my ass!!!! I hope this can be of some help to other Intrepid owners with less miles, great engine, CRAP Tranny. I'll drive a manual until my clutching knee goes out.
