Grand Caravan SXT

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

Transmission started slipping at 98,000 miles. Dealership diagnosed the problem as "normal" since the problem occurred only a few times and it was not constantly happening. Called Chrysler and they told me that was normal operation and not to worry. at 100,001 miles the problem got worse until I could not drive the van.

Guess what....Because the car passed 100,000 miles they did not honor the warranty.(Chrysler)

I had to replace it from my pocket and left down by this company. Tried to call and elevate the case with a higher level of customer service but it was a no go.

Grand Caravan SXT 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 55,000 miles

Last week while my wife was driving, it dropped down to low (1). She was driving straight and at a steady rate of speed of about 25 MPH. It dropped down, the car suddenly slowed. The car behind her had to slam on its brakes and was not happy. She had to get off the road and shift to neutral or park before it started working normally again. I took it to a transmission shop. There were no codes and they couldn't find anything wrong. They suggested having the dealer flash the transmission (although I fail to see how this will fix something like this). Of course having the tranny drop to low is a big concern, especially on a freeway. With a replacement cost of $5,000 I am afraid to drive it. It is interesting that unless the vehicle is stopped, you cannot actually shift it into '1' as it won't let you. What would make it do that all on its own at 25 MPH? Initially the tranny shop suggested replacing the speed sensor. Now they say it would be a shot in the dark and they have no idea what is causing it.

Also, similar to many other reports, shifting into drive it often makes a clunk. It has done that since I got it when it only had 16k miles. I have also observed when accelerating on a hill, it sometimes makes a thump. Its like like a wheel hops rather than spins or something although I am guessing. These things are annoying but not like the above problem. Perhaps flashing the tranny might help with this, but not sure about tranny drop down problem.

Update from Jun 6, 2018: Last week while my wife was driving, it dropped down to low (1). She was driving straight and at a steady rate of speed of about 25 MPH. It dropped down, and the engine raced. It really scared her. She had to get off the road and shift to neutral or park before it started working normally again. This happened again on the same day this time at 35 MPH. I took it to a transmission shop. There were no codes and they couldn't find anything wrong. I then took it to a Dodge dealer and re-flashed the transmission control module MCU. Of course having the tranny drop to low is a big concern, especially on a freeway. With a replacement cost of $5,000 I am afraid to drive it. It is interesting that unless the vehicle is stopped, you cannot actually shift it into '1' as it won't let you. What would make it do that all on its own at 25-35 MPH? Initially the tranny shop suggested replacing the speed sensor. Now they say it would be a shot in the dark and they have no idea what is causing it.

Also, similar to many other reports, shifting into drive it often makes a clunk. It has done that since I got it when it only had 16k miles. Update from Jun 7, 2018: After re-flashing the transmission control module, it shifts notably smoother. Since I have not been able to reproduce the original problem which happened when my wife was driving, I do not know if the original problem has been fixed. Time will probably tell. I have not seen anyone else with this problem.

Grand Caravan

  • Automatic transmission
  • 19,200 miles

We bought our 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan in April of 2013 brand new. Almost immediately we noticed a hard clunk when we shifted from Park into Drive and vice versa....not every time, but often enough to take notice. This van is our only vehicle, now has 20K miles, and my husband drives it most often (to work), so he notices the clunks and seeming slips between gears while driving more often than I usually do. We just got back from a 10 day vacation, and ever since it has been doing the above almost every time we drive it, but also no we feel a shuddering as we accelerate or brake. There is also a hesitation to shift from 1st gear to 2nd, and less commonly, from 2nd to 3rd. I'm sad to see the transmission is still an issue with these newer models; I previously owned a 2006 Dodge Caravan and noticed around the 70K mile mark a marked shuddering and other problems. Other than this, I love the Caravan. I'm just feeling very uneasy about a potential transmission replacement in our future, and to see the dealerships not being able to figure out the issue and fix it doesn't help. Having owned a couple of new cars of other makes and models, and never having issues like this with those, I KNOW this can't be "normal"!

front wheels lose power/transmission shifts in manual mode

My 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan was purchased new on 02/12/13. Shortly after the purchase of this vehicle I noticed that the tranmission was slipping. The tranmission then started to go into manual mode for no reason. I have also been driving and the van loses all power to the front wheels. All of the problems listed happen intermittently. During the first four trips to multiple Dodge dealerships they stated they could not reproduce any of the problems and no errors were showing up in the computer. When the next incident occured I video taped it. On the fifth trip to the Dodge dealership they agreed that there was a problem, only after reviewing the video. The dealership again worked on my van but they still could not find out what was causing the problems. The delaership changed the shifter hoping that would take care of the problems, it didn't. The van now has 11000 miles on it and I have been forced to file under the lemon laws because Chrysler has failed to take care of the problems. I recently contacted my local Dodge dealership because I am still experiencing problems with the transmission. I was informed that since I filed under the lemon laws that they were not going to look into the problems any further until Chrysler determines what they are going to do. Until then I am stuck driving a safety hazard.
