This portion of the axle snapped going down the road at 60 mph. The van's rear end immediately started to become uncontrollable. Slowing down was tricky when gently applying the brakes the front end of the van went to the right while the rear end of the car wanted to swing to the left. The snapping of this axle after owning the vehicle for six years, without going over anything that would have severely jarred the suspension, is unacceptable. This is a catastrophic failure and I'm lucky that I didn't flip the van, that was carrying me and my family at the time, in trying to get control of it. There is a recall on about 130 of these that were modified however the general public that owns one of these needs to replace the whole rear axle which is a 3 day process and ~~$1400 worth of out of pocket.
