When in drive, the shifter lets you downshift by pushing left and upshift by pushing right. When downshifting, the shifter failed to return to the center position, making the upshift/downshift feature unusable. Probably a broken spring, but there are no serviceable parts in the shifter assembly, so an entirely new shifter was ordered and installed.
