My 2003 dodge Grand Caravan eX with 3.6L V6 is not doing well and it has been in the hospital with my mechanic for more than a month now (they're great--had the use of their loaner the whole time). They are calling it a "Problem Car", a "Project Car"--one they wont give up on because it has presented them with such a confounding situation, that they see it as a way of keeping their staff sharp (not charging me for that time).
Intermittent electrical problems with the ignition/battery/starter system have made the Van untrustworthy and, therefore, undrivable. Like other posts I've seen, I've been experiencing the proverbial "click, click, click" at startup.
Battery replaced. Some worn-out wiring replaced. Starter replaced--twice. All during this one extended visit to the hospital.
The starter is still not engaging reliably, but when the engine actually does crank, it started every time, just like it always has. The starters work outside the vehicle on the bench but not when they're installed. The system is losing voltage somewhere between the battery and the starter--but it is not losing it every time. We thought it was related to the onset of winter in Chicagoland, but that has been ruled out now, too.
All other aspects of the electrical system (power everything, dash lights, headlights & exterior lights, Factory radio/cd/dvd entertainment system and screen, etc., etc.) are working fine.
As of today 1/12/18 3:30 PM CDT, my Mechanic and his team are thinking the problem is related to one of the many computer modules in the car. I have seen some other posts on this site where those modules have been suspected, and in some cases, where the Dealers have admitted that the wrong modules were installed from the get-go. Yikes.
I should know more on Monday 1/15/18.
