Should a vehicle owner continue to keep their older vehicles the headlamps on many vehicles have plastic faces that become etched over time making it impossible to drive the vehicle at night without putting on the high beams. Hence night driving has become hazardous for these vehicles and to others. The kits to clean them do not work. The entire headlamp on the vehicles need to be replaced to correct this problem and that costs hundreds of dollars. It is not so simple as to just replace a plastic cover. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where it was diagnosed that the back up switch had failed. The mechanic advised that the switch was located within the transmission and the entire transmission would need to be removed to perform the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that the headlights normally failed one at a time. The headlight's front control module was replaced in 2006. In December of 2008, the headlights failed while driving 65 mph. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the multifunction switch was the cause of the failure. The multifunction switch was replaced and corrected the issue temporarily. The failure mileage was 99,000 and current mileage was 180,000.
