not shifting properly

got stuck in 6th and also shifts up and down on it's own

It started a couple months ago really. I didn't really notice it. I would come to a stop, at a light or a stop sign, and it would feel like someone would "love tap" me from behind. I'd look in the rear-view and see no cars. I'd felt that before in my '77 Datsun 280Z, when the drive-train bolts were loose. Definitely a drive train problem I felt.

Then yesterday coming home from work the transmission started downshifting and up-shifting (small jerks in the transmission) on its own while driving steadily at a steady speed or maybe slightly increasing RPM.

I just came off the freeway-exit and slowing to a stop and I noticed that my Durango was not downshifting into lower gears as I approached the stop light... luckily the light turned green and I pressed the gas all the way down to see if it would change gears and shift up, but nothing. Gas pedal down to the floor, no affect; paddle-shifting (manual mode), no affect no response. I then climbed the hill steadily and came down the other side, but with very little RPM's and going very slow. I then made it to a stop light. Still in 6th gear at full stop. Then I put the Durango into Park; still in 6th gear (according to the digital display). I pressed the ignition to shut off the vehicle, luckily it turned off. Then started the engine. It started in 1st and then I noticed the engine light came on. I was able to get to work and back home.

Update from Mar 24, 2017: The fix: TCM (Transmission Control Module) and PCM (Powertrain Control Module) per TSB (Technical Service Bulletin). Basically it's on a technician's bulletin board of common problems, but not necessarily a "recall" service. The on-board computer has to be "flashed", updated via technician programming device. So basically we are screwed and have to wait for our vehicle to fail, before we can bring it in to be "serviced". It's a computer glitch just like your computer on your desk and it fails time to time, but instead of installing updates (fixes to bad programming) we have to drop it in the shop for a few days.

Update from Mar 24, 2017: One more thing I noticed on this board. It doesn't matter which gear your Dodge got stuck in, it's any gear and it's the computer malfunctioning.
