CarComplaints.com Notes: When the 3rd-generation Durango was introduced in 2011 owners almost immediately started having a wide range of issues -- from water pump failure to stalling engines. Turns out the TIPM is to blame and those problems carried into the 2012 model year.

TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Modules) is responsible for controlling and distributing power to all the vehicle’s electrical functions. So when the TIPM starts acting up, so do all sorts of problems in the vehicle.

The problems have been so bad -- and replacement parts became so hard to find -- that a class-action lawsuit was filed against Chrysler focusing on the 2011-2012 Durango. The lawsuit accuses the automaker of ignorning the problem until it spiraled out of control.

Initially in early July, 2014 my 2012 Dodge Durango developed a computer failure causing the battery to eventually drain, loss of engine power and ability to maintain or accelerate. Repair was made after the vehicle was towed to the local Dodge dealer, manfredi Dodge, staten island N.Y, and subsequently the battery repaired and the computer replaced. Shortly after the repair was completed the passenger airbag failure light would intermittently illuminate and the vehicle occasionally would not start. Another trip to the dealer and the passenger seat airbag sensor was reported faulty and the vehicle tipm sensor needed replacement or repair. Conferral with the dealer suggested that the tipm sensor be replaced rather than repaired to assure longevity of the repair and overall satisfaction. Vehicle is a lemon!

I was driving approx. 45 per hour, when the vehicle seemed to just shut off in stages, I was able to pull into a parking lot however it did not want to start for a few minutes. When I hit the push button, it would not start.also it has since been turning over, but not starting. This has been an intermittent problem, and has done this under all conditions including when it has been sitting, and after it has been driven.

Twice in early February, 2014, the engine (V-6) stopped running and the cel popped up. The first time I was cruising at 50 mph and the cel came on and the RPM went to zero, but as I coasted to the side of the road the engine restarted by itself at about 40 mph, so it was off for less than 10-15 seconds. The second time, I was backing out of a parking space. After moving about 6 feet the engine died and the tach went to zero and the cel came on. I turned everything off and restarted the engine and continued with my errands. In both instances the engine was at operating temperature and the fuel tank had at least 10 gallons. The dealer checked the car but found no codes to identify this problem.

On several occasions my 2012 Dodge Durango would acted like it was having a hard time turning over when I would start it. One time all of my auxiliary lights lit up and then the entire SUV cut off. After I had my oil changed 09/08/14 my 2012 Dodge Durango started having even more issues with starting up. It would take me anywhere from 3-10 times to get it started. I heard a sizzling sound under the SUV after I had parked it and got home. The next morning the entire SUV was dead. My neighbor was able to jump start it, so I went and purchased a brand new battery. It still had issues starting, but after several attempts it would finally turn over. It even completely cut off on me while I was sitting at a stop light. Last night I heard the same sizzling sound somewhere underneath my Durango and this morning it was completely dead again. This time it wouldn't even turn on even after giving it a jump. Obviously it's not just me. This situation is so unfair because right now my car doesn't work at all and the dealership is acting as if they have no idea what I'm talking about. If I was able to 'easily' figure out there is an obvious issue that we are all having just by doing a simple google search, you would think the 'experts' responsible for selling me my car and working on it would know too. Individuals and big companies who take advantage of moral correct people always end up losing in the end. I hope they do the responsible thing and recall the faulty tipm associated with all of our vehicles with no charge to us.

2012 Dodge Durango crew with a V6. Engine died while driving down the highway. I lost power steering and power brakes, but managed to get out of traffic and let it coast to the shoulder. The engine would crank, but immediately die. After a few attempts, the engine began running smoothly. Since then, it will occasionally not start (the starter turns over, but the engine will not run). No codes are displaying when hooked to a computer. A mechanic told me it was the tipm and I would have to take it to a dealer. After looking online, I found many other complaints for the same problem. Engine seems to have a better start record if I turn the key on and wait 2 seconds before starting vs immediately trying to crank the car as soon as I insert the key. Remote start rarely works now. My main concern is the engine dying while my wife is driving in heavy traffic (she is the primary driver). To me, this is a much more pressing issue than the current recalls.

The totally integrated modular engine (time) has had many problems since the purchase of the 2012 Dodge Durango. The SUV has stopped dead while in drive on interstate 95. The panel lights has all come on all at once while driving. The engine has stalled and would not restart several times late at night. The exterior lights has gone off completely at night without panel light notification. The fog lights will not work at all times. The radio at times will not pay. The push start button will not always start the vehicle. The engine permits a foul order at times. The engine has gone from automatic to manual drive without placement in manual. The brake pedal will not come back after being pushed to the floor. The mother board has had to be replaced. The entire electrical system has shut down - vehicle had to be towed to the dealership. I have been given a rental car 4 times for an approximate total of 30 days to try to rectify the problems. I have 4 recalls for various issues and none have been fixed due to parts are not readily available. Recall id's - April 2014 service brakes and brakes hydraulic anti-lock #102663, #102664, #102298 and July 2014 105085 - electrical system wiring. There are several class action lawsuits against the Chrysler group, llc for the 2012 Dodge Durango. I no longer feel safe in this vehicle, I can possibly cause an accident or someone can hit me with all the problems and potentially hurt myself or others with all the recalls and engine problems.

On several occasions upon pulling out in to traffic the vehicle either stopped accelerating or would not accelerate at all. This has also happened on a few occasions attempting to pass another vehicle. Upon pulling out to pass the vehicle would not accelerate. This is a very unsafe problem that has caused my family to nearly get T-boned after pulling out into traffic. Other owners seem to have similar symptoms which eventually get traced back to a faulty cylinder head. Regardless of how many times the vehicles is sent in for service nothing is done about it until the check engine light shows a trouble code. Chrysler has been aware of this problem since the middle of 2012 but has refused to issue a recall.

I have a 2012 Dodge durange rt. When parked at a gas station, tried to turn engine on with push start switch and engine does not start. When pushing start switch again it makes the sound like the engine is trying to turn over but does nothing. In order to get the engine to stop from making the turn over noise I have to move from park to in gear. Then I receive the "ignition or accessory on" message. In order to get the message clear I have to turn off vehicle without pressing the brake. This puts the engine into the off mode and I have to start the process to get the car to start all over again. This has happened multiple occasions and I have video to show the defect. I have done research and read this issue with many people saying it is the tipm defect. Also, when using my right blinker instead of the front blinker working my fog lights flash. For the vehicle to not start or stall is a big safety concern and liability.

The vehicle was purchased used with approximately 19,000 miles. Current mileage is 37,705. During about 1/3 of all engine starts, hot and cold, the engine will run briefly (less than 5 seconds) and then stall. The engine will usually start and run on the second try but sometimes will not start until the third try. The vehicle was inspected at approximately 30,000 miles by the local Chrysler dealership in cathedral city, ca, which reported they could not duplicate the problem.

Sitting idle on a driveway vehicle began to smoke and smell. Punched gas three times and each time huge white blue cloud of smoke pushed out. Smell of burning metal came with cloud of smoke. Took to dealership where they at first could not recreate the problem. After placing the vehicle on an incline and starting it up they too got the smoke, and not just from mine but from another on the lot. They tell me that it is the oil pan design is faulty and that my vehicle will smoke when on an incline, driveway, hill, stuck in traffic at a slope. The emissions are horrendous and I am shocked that a 57 hemi engine would do this. Shocked more that Chrysler knows of the problem and has not yet fixed it.
