CarComplaints.com Notes: When the 3rd-generation Durango was introduced in 2011 owners almost immediately started having a wide range of issues -- from water pump failure to stalling engines. Turns out the TIPM is to blame and those problems carried into the 2012 model year.

TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Modules) is responsible for controlling and distributing power to all the vehicle’s electrical functions. So when the TIPM starts acting up, so do all sorts of problems in the vehicle.

The problems have been so bad -- and replacement parts became so hard to find -- that a class-action lawsuit was filed against Chrysler focusing on the 2011-2012 Durango. The lawsuit accuses the automaker of ignorning the problem until it spiraled out of control.

My 2012 Dodge Durango purchased brand new has been having major electrical issues since the motor was power washed at covert Dodge dealership in North austin. They had an inexperienced car washer clean up the oil that was on the motor from a hose change. He used a very high pressure, pressure washer and it shorted the electronics causing the vehicle to shut down unexpectedly with no warning. This has happened multiple times within the last 6 months. I have had the car at 3 different Dodge dealers trying to resolve the issue. On 9/22/2016 the battery light came on while going 75 on the highway. I smelled a strong odor of electrical burning and all the lights on the dash board came on, the blind spot alert system was stating it was inoperable, the ac stopped working, the seat belt light and buzzer stated to go off even though my belt was fastened and then the Durango just shut off, right in the middle of the toll road highway stranding me in the middle lane. The hazard lights did not even work. I put the car in park to try to restart it but it was totally dead, nothing worked and the car was stuck in park! I could not put the vehicle in neutral to move it out of the highway, several cars did not realize I was stopped and locked up their brakes nearly missing me. I was so afraid someone was going to run right into the back of me and the car. Major safety issue. I called the mopar warranty road side assistance and 1 hours later I was able to get the car off the 102 degree highway. As a result of all of these issues, which seem to have started when covert Dodge power washed the engine bay, I am no longer confident the vehicle can be trusted and be reliable not to mention the safety factor. As you can tell from the vehicle history, I feel I have been patient and cooperative in allowing Chrysler and the dealerships to find a resolution. Updated 08/07/2017

Driving normally for about an hour. Made 10 minute stop. Came out and car would not fire. Cranked for 20 seconds twice and nothing. Waited 5 minutes and it started. Went to pull out into traffic and it stalled. Cranked again, nothing. Then started. It happened again 2 days later. Took to dealer and they said it was a faulty tipm and not covered by warranty.

I brought my vehicle in for a problem with the tires or brakes and they found a leak. At first they quoted me on the transmission cooler and all of the hoses. It was around $1,100. My husband brought it back and come to find out it was only leaking from the actual cooler and the hoses did not need to be changed. It is leaking where the tube is saudered to the end cap on the transmission cooler. Shouldn't this be a manufacture defect and not cost me over $900" the car is only 2 years old. I am over the 36,000 mile mark but the car is only 2 years old and that should not have happened. Shouldn't Dodge cover for this repair or it even be a recall since it's from a defect and not any thing that has happened while I was driving"

I currently purchased a 2012 Dodge Durango with the V-6 engine. I noticed a similar issue when starting out, at about 22 mph to 27mph it feels like there is a power drop-off if accelerating normal. If you accelerate faster the drop-off is not present but a speeding ticket maybe coming. Current mileage 36,275.

Vehicle starts then stalls out, or just cranks and cranks, and won't start. Happened a few times at stop lights after short drive. Was able to finally get started to drive to dealer, was told I could either replace the tipm for over $1000, or do a fuel relay bypass to the existing tipm for a little over $550. Same exact problem all the recalled Durango/Grand Cherokee have, yet the 2012's haven't been recalled" why" vehicle left us stranded multiple times in fl heat with infant in car.

I have a 2012 Dodge durange rt. When parked at a gas station, tried to turn engine on with push start switch and engine does not start. When pushing start switch again it makes the sound like the engine is trying to turn over but does nothing. In order to get the engine to stop from making the turn over noise I have to move from park to in gear. Then I receive the "ignition or accessory on" message. In order to get the message clear I have to turn off vehicle without pressing the brake. This puts the engine into the off mode and I have to start the process to get the car to start all over again. This has happened multiple occasions and I have video to show the defect. I have done research and read this issue with many people saying it is the tipm defect. Also, when using my right blinker instead of the front blinker working my fog lights flash. For the vehicle to not start or stall is a big safety concern and liability.

After backing out of parking space put vehicle in drive. Upon placing my foot on accelerator I noted that vehicle barely moved. Looked to see if vehicle was in drive. Display read 4. attempted several times to put vehicle in drive without success. Had to put vehicle in park, turn engine off and the restart. This was the first time this has occurred. Vehicle at dealer now. This incident occurred 1 day after I noted vehicle was not shifting into gear when placed in drive or reverse. Would have to wait, after moving gearshift, before transmission would actually shift to drive or reverse. At one point I placed foot on accelerator when transmission had not shifted and vehicle lurched backwards.

I have had an intermittent transmission/electronic malfunction. After starting the vehicle and moving the shift lever from "P" (park) to "D" (drive) the numeral "4" is displayed in the evic (electronic vehicle information center) where one would expect to see the letter "D". at this point when the accelerator is pushed the vehicle moves forward but with a distinct lack of power. When moving the shift lever to the left -- the ers (electronic range select) function of the shift lever in non-functioning -- the vehicle stays in 4th gear and the numeral in the evic window is still "4". the vehicle is "stuck" in 4th gear. The only way to return the vehicle to "normal" function is to turn it off and restart the engine. Upon restart the problem has never repeated itself. The incident has happened numerous times and has been documented (video using an iphone) on 4 separate occasions. I have taken the vehicle to the service department of the dealer where I purchased it several times, and on each occasion different "fixes" have been attempted. The "malfunction" happened again on April 9th, 2014, the most recent occurrence.

When driving the vehicle during the first snow storm of the season when I reached my destination I was unable to shift the vehicle into park or reverse. The only thing I could do is drive or neutral. After taking the vehicle to the dealership I was told that snow had gotten lodged in the drive shaft therefore not allowing the car to be shifted. Chrysler told me that this probably wouldn't happen again and that it was because we had heavy wet snow. This is Wisconsin!!! we get snow all of the time. They stated that there is nothing that they can do to make sure it does not happen again. I am glad that I was not in a position where I needed to reverse the vehicle or I would have been stuck 55 miles from home in a snow storm!

Brand new vehicle lease. At dealership when vehicle was put in gear engine stalled 4 times. Salesman entered vehicle and accelerated engine then put in gear and vehicle continued to run and stated vehicle was ok. About 30 miles away when coming to a stop because of traffic vehicle stalled in the middle of a busy 50mph intersection and was almost struck by a oncoming tractor trailer. After locking up his brakes an accident was just barely avoided. It took 4 tries to get the Durango to move again without shutting off. Vehicle is at the dealer now and they do not know as of yet what the problem is and refuse to give me a different vehicle. My family could have been killed.
