CarComplaints.com Notes: The third generation Durango is plagued by a defective TIPM, particularily in the 2011 and 2012 model years.

TIPM, which stands for Totally Integrated Power Modules, is responsible for controlling and distributing power to all the vehicle’s electrical functions. So when your TIPM goes haywire, bad things start happening. Things like your water pump can stop working, your engine can stall out and your airbags can randomly deploy.

Durango Citadel 5.7L V8

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

The Citadel has been randomly doing strange things since I bought this vehicle certified pre-owned in 2013. Windows have been rolled down, sunroof open, hatchback wide open when returning to parking garage, and of course not having the car start or hard to start. Pretty scary when I come upon my car in the grocery store parking lot to have the windows down and sunroof open, etc.

On Sunday, August 24th, came home and opened the garage and both the passenger and driver side window were rolled down about 3/4 the way. Tried to start the car to roll up the windows and it would not start. Tried again twice and finally it started.

Took my car to work on Monday, August 25th, and it had a very difficult time starting, about 3 or 4 tries. Car started fine for my ride from work.

Took it to exercise class tonight and the car just wouldn't start at all while I was trying to return home. Groaning and making all sorts of noises. Had to get a ride home.

I'm going to be taking it in to the Dodge dealership where I hope they can fix it. I'm very disappointed in Chrysler for having known defects and selling me a car with this issue. I bought it with 25,000 and had I known to look for these issues (as it was doing the electrical things randomly) I would have brought it to the dealership while under warranty to have the TICM checked!

Update from Aug 30, 2014: Took my SUV to Orlando Dodge. Parts and labor to replace the TIPM was $1,227. It was found to be faulty. I hope Chrysler has a recall so I can be reimbursed. On a side note, the car seems to be working quite well. I used to have issues trying to open the door with the keyless entry, key not found, having to press really hard on the door button, etc. Seems to be really easy to open it and lock it now. I hope that is the last of my issues with this vehicle. I really have enjoyed my purchase. We use it to haul a 6000 lb travel trailer so I am fortunate that it didn't stall on me while towing!

Durango Express 3.6L V6

We attempted to start our 2011 Dodge Durango on 08/11/14, but it would not start. After several minutes I tried starting it again. It started but stuttered badly as if no fuel was getting to the engine. I researched the issue online and found that several Durango and Cherokee owners were having similar issues at low miles. The problem seems to stem from a faulty TIPM, but Chrylser is not issuing a recall for this part. I took my vehicle to the dealership, and they tested it. The TIPM was found to be the problem, but since I had 2,000 miles over the 36,000 warranty, it was not covered. My options were to replace the TIPM for 1200 dollars, or to have them an external bypass to the fuel pump. This bypasses the faulty TIPM and cost 428 dollars. Chrysler is obviously aware that the TIPM's are bad since they came up with a solution to the problem (Star Case #S130800039). Luckily my wife and kids were not driving on a freeway somewhere when the problem started. I am also worried that the TIPIM could start causing problems in other areas such as deploying the air bags for no reason. I know there is a class action lawsuit addressing this issue, but it would be nice if Chrysler would just stand behind their products.

I have a 2011 Durango and it's giving me a hard time starting. When I try and start the Durango and it seems to start up and then starts but quickly shuts off after 5-10 seconds. I also smell something BURNING & when I try and start it again it keeps doing the same thing over and over, until it finally turns on completely after 10 to 20 min.

I took it to the dealership and one of the guys told me it needs software updates. But a year prior to that I took it in and another guy told me it was something to do with the fuel injection. I had this truck in 3 to 5 times within a year and a half with issues I am having. This needs to be RECALLED ASAP.

Very annoying. Alarm goes off randomly which my neighbors love. Nothing like paying a lot of money for a car to have it not start reliably leaving you stranded. My wife is now afraid to drive it after being left at numerous locations with a non-functioning car.

I purchased my 2011 Dodge Durango back in August of 2011. I never had any problems with it until March of 2014. I was about to leave a Home Depot and the engine would not start. The vehicle would crank but not start or start and shut off, it took about five tries before it would start properly. I took the push start button out and tried it with the key, the vehicle finally started. At that point, I thought it may have been an issue with the push start button. When I got home I put the button back in and the vehicle started just fine. I didn’t worry much about it. On August 13, 2014 the problem started again. This time the vehicle took me 10-15 tries to start. Unfortunately, the dealership in my area was booked full for appointments and I had multiple errands to run. The vehicle started each time I had to crank it during that afternoon without any problems. I decided to take it to an Advanced Auto Parts store to have them take a look at it. The vehicle started up about 10 times in a row, as if there was not a problem. They put the diagnostic machine on it and it the store associate told me that the machine could not find any problems. Then, when I tried to leave the problem started. The vehicle would crank and not start or the vehicle would start and shut off. It took me another 10-15 tries to get it started again. I’m not sure what the problem is, but it is a major problem not knowing if my vehicle will start or not.

I have had problems starting my vehicle and now the fuel pump wont shut off. I have to unhook the battery.

I'm sure its the TIPM. It needs to be recalled NOW!!!! The TIPM problem can cause airbags not to deploy and the vehicle to stall. This is a major safety factor. I hope Chrysler comes to there senses or they will end up like GM with millions in fines.

Durango

The issue began by intermittent problems starting the vehicle. The problem went away for a few months, but then later started getting worse and worse until finally I was stranded with my two children. I had the vehicle towed to a Dodge dealer where I was informed my problem was due to a defective TIPM. I had never heard of such a thing, but after this, I decided to look it up. I found that this issue is so common that there was a NATIONAL SHORTAGE of the part and people were being left without their cars for weeks while they waited for the part to come in! There are a few pending class action lawsuits against Chrysler for this exact issue, but despite the severity of this part failing and the overwhelming number of occurrences, Chrysler still refuses to recall the part. I for one will NEVER buy another Chrysler product after dealing with this.

Again.. I LOVE my Durango, but this whole starting the car thing has become ridiculous. Just like the key fab issue where the car is not recognized. No dealer has helped or acknowledged that I have the issue. I have been in an ongoing battle for help since day one.

Finally I get Chrysler to help, take the car in for diagnosis and low and behold we're in a "no start situation" which left me fighting to get the issue covered under one of the three warranty's that don't cover a damn thing. So... I replace the fuel relay as they believe that's the issue and guess what.. momma's car won't start AGAIN. Here I am sitting at a customer's house in my fabulous Durango that was "fixed" the day before and it won't start. Damn that was great. I finally see the TPIM recall items on the web and put two and two together.

I honestly feel like these assholes need to be sued. This is an American made car that embarrasses Americans and puts our families in danger.

Car gets driven very lightly. It is used as a family car!!! Sucks to be in the middle of nowhere in the car does not start. Then you call the tow truck until truck driver shows up and then the car starts. I hope Dodge stands up to the product and takes care of the customers.

The problem at this time was the vehicle wouldn't start, it would start then shut off, this would be a repeated pattern 3-4 times before the vehicle would stay engaged for us to actually drive it. This problem would happen off and on and then it would be fine, but then it would start all over again with the same repeated pattern of starting and shutting off.

We took it to the dealership where we purchased it and they said it wasn't the TIPM, but that the computers needed to be calibrated. Of course each time I took it in the car started without any problems, but would resume the problem the very next day. I mentioned to the service mechanic that we were told by a mechanic friend that this was a fuel line problem, he said no it wasn't. We are sick and tired of the run-around we are getting from Temecula Chrysler Dodge!!

We bought our Durango three months ago. This is our 4th Durango that we have owned. We have never had problems with the other ones. Now though my car won't start, fuel pump fan continues to blow. After reading many complaints this seems to be a problem with the 2011 Durangos. Something to do with TIPM. We are taking it in on Monday. I think that dodge should fix this problem. I have four kids and this is our only family car. If this car breaks down then we have no transportation. Dodge said they will not give me a loaner while mine is being fixed. This isn't right. Only had the car three months and its breaking down.

7/19/14 heading to the beach for my husband's birthday and car wouldn't start. He then assumes I don't keep up w/ the car and that the engine oil was low. So I bought oil and put it in the car. The car started and we went to the beach which was about an hour 1/2 away. Leaving the beach it wouldn't start again and after a few minutes of my husband playing with it, it started. Sunday morning woke up early and car wouldn't start. Spoke to my husband about what he did and tried that and it didn't work. Needless to say I didn't make it to work that day b/c after about 2 hours I gave up. I started googling what was going on and why my car wouldn't start. Of course I find every reason in the book but I kept looking until I came across everyone else's complaint about this TIPM module. I mentioned it to my husband and he said that could be it. Never expected this to actually be the problem since its practically a brand new car. Nonetheless I admitted defeat and had it toward to a dealership I frequent. They weren't sure if they could even get to the car the next day but would try. At about 4pm they advised that they reviewed the car and took our information of what we thought it was and checked that immediately and sure enough the TIPM was bad. Luckily for me, my dealer happen to have one in stock and was able to put it on in about an hour. I just don't understand how this isn't covered that this module could just go bad. I did find there is a class action lawsuit from other Jeep, Durango owners and I plan on joining in. I'm out pay from my job but also $1000+ to get this fixed.

Durango became occasionally difficult to start about a month ago. Wouldn't start when you pushed the button, and sometimes when it would start, it just didn't sound right engine-wise. Once you pushed the button again, it would be fine and start normally, drive normally. Took to dealer, but couldn't replicate the problem.

This issue became a significant problem this week. One morning the vehicle took about 10 minutes to finally start. Then we heard a weird noise in the garage at night and realized that the fuel pump was running while the vehicle was parked and off in the garage. Took the fuse out and went to bed. The next morning the Durango wouldn't start and finally the repeated attempts killed the battery and we had to jump it. Drove right to the dealer.

The dealer we purchased the Durango from said there was a 2 week wait to even look at it. We had looked online and found the TIPM problem, so we told them about that. A fix would be about $1,000. We went to another Dodge dealer, same estimate, but only 1 week wait (as if that's any better!!). We're paying for our own rental car now, because we need a reliable vehicle for the week and this Durango definitely is not reliable!

I guess we will find out in a week if they fix the problem, but of course, still can't duplicate the problem at the dealership.

Update from Jul 25, 2014: Surprisingly, the dealership that initially told us they had a one week wait called later in the afternoon. They had checked the vehicle and guess what - it was a TIPM problem, just like we thought. They had one - and only one - in stock, so we get it and they are supposed to install today. But we do have to pay about $1200 for the fix. Definitely not happy about that. I will hang on to the receipt and hopefully a recall will be coming soon.

Ridiculous!! This TIPM issue is beyond absurd. It feels good knowing I am not alone in this but at the same time, if there are so many of us, something must be done! Bought used 2011 durango rt. Two days later sputtered and died after starting. Fired right back up no issues other than a really slow crank which was taken to dealer and starter was bad covered under my extended warranty. Picked up today and push button fired right up. Next start it sputtered and died. Then tried again and starter cranked for ten seconds and dis not start. Tried 2 more times and fired up and ran normal. When i purchased thus vehicle, they only had one new key fob. As part of sale i told them i required two working fobs. And the push button start and proximity lock and unlock was not working. When they had in to fix starter, they fixed this also. 2 working fobs and push start working. Every other time i start it is sputtering and dies. Ive been reading about the tipm and sounds like an issue with that. I bought best ex warranty and electronics package also so I'm hoping this will cover it, although i shouldn't have to use my ex warranty on this. Dodge should take care of it. Has 48000 miles. Also took dealer a week to fix a starter. Said it was a pain to push into work bay from lot?
