CarComplaints.com Notes: The second generation Durango was introduced in 2004 and instantly came under fire for, well, catching on fire.
From 2004-2006 electrical overloading in the driver's side instrument panel caused numerous reports of interior fires. The interior infernos became so commonplace that Chrysler eventually issued a recall.
The problems didn't stop there, however. Owners of the recalled vehicles complained about being treated unfairly and given take-it-or-leave-it low ball settlement offers. "They offered me $2000 under NADA retail as a settlement," said one owner, "and have been rude and hostile to deal with." Nothing says awesome service like treating your customers rudely after their cars have already caught on fire.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. When the gas tank was filled, the contact noticed that fuel would spill back out. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they replaced a few parts; however, the contact does not remember which ones specifically. The failure was not corrected and the repair caused the vehicle to stall. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The dealer stated that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 05V034000 (fuel system, gasoline: Storage: Tank assembly: Filler pipe and cap). The failure and current mileages were 69,000.
When I fill of the gas tank it overflows after shut off. Has happened about 7 times. On January 26, 2009 Dodge filed a notice of defect on this problem but the company and the dealers say my car is not included in the recall.
Fuel spillage regular occurrence. The tank says I am on nearly on empty, I go to the station and "fill up" the problem comes in when I get close to the end. Vent seems to prevent fuel tank to be filled and it spills all over side of vehicle. It sounds a rushing noise pump nozzle clicks and gas goes everywhere. I have contacted the dealership and they act like they have no idea this would happen. After reading complaints online I am not alone. www.fixya.com/cars/T592484-fuel_overflow_recall_2005_durango#sameproblemcontinued I am told that it probably needs a new fuel tank by the dealer, I type in my VIN and it says it is not included in recall. I am thinking the same issue that causes the check valve not to close also causes it to close or stick closed as well. I am afraid that one day the fuel that splashes back will get in my eye or cause other issues like a fire. I first thought it may be a pump issue but it has happened to me at nearly every station I have went to. I am also curious how a 26 gallon tank can never take more than 20 gallons, I realize that there is a reserve but 6 gallons? please help me and the others listed on the link I included. We can't all be crazy this is a widespread issue.
Fuel spit-back during refueling: When filling up vehicle, gas backflows out of gas tank at the end of fueling. Has happened many times at different gas stations. There is a recall on Durango of same year and vintage, but my VIN not included in recall and Chrysler refuses to accept responsibility for design flaw.

I have a 2005 Dodge Durango that I recently started having problems with. Problem 1: when filling the fuel tank the pump does not automatically shut off and fuel comes shooting out the top of the tank. Problem 2: when driving at night the instrument panel flickers on and off. I checked the NHTSA.gov website and found that there were recalls issued for both of these issues that I've experienced so I took my car to the dealer. The dealer said my VIN is not covered under the recall and that I have to call Chrysler. I contacted Chrysler and was told that the dealer is unwilling to work for any discounts and that because my car is out of the warranty period they will not pay for any services. In both recall notices it states that these issues are both fire hazards and I don't feel that I should have to pay $1700 out of my own pocket to resolve them, as these are known issues with 2005 Dodge Durangos. Please help!
When filling up vehicle, gas backflows out of gas tank at the end of fueling. Has happened many times at different gas stations. There is a recall on truck model but my VIN not included in recall.
My 2005 Dodge Durango releases fuel back out of the fuel filler when ever I fill up I do not top off Dodge has a recall for some of their Durangos of this year and make but they say mine is not included this is very dangerous with the fumes and liquid coming out of my filler neck. When I contacted Dodge they stated I should see my dealer about the problem.it seems the problem goes further then they are admitting and I want them to fix the problem
There was no lead up, the gas tank just started overflowing and it would not shut off the automatic shut off on the gas pump when fueling the tank. It happens everytime that we fill up using the automatic shut off feature on a gas pump. The result is several ounces (just a guess, but it is a lot) of gasoline running down the side of the truck, onto the ground and even splashing onto an unsuspecting truck owner. We took the truck into our dealer and they said that there was a recall for certain vins of this vehicle type, but ours is not part of the recall, even though it was manufactured in the same year as the recall vehicles. The estimate for a new fuel tank is around $800 and of course the warranty went void a few thousand miles prior to the malfunction we are experiencing. If Dodge knows there are problems on some of the trucks in the same year that ours was manufactured and nothing was done to correct the defect, how can they not be liable for fixing this problem"? Dodge is not willing to fix and I believe this is a safety issue that they know about, but refuse to fix in regards to all of the trucks affected. It seems as if no change was made to the fuel tank design that they admit was wrong in vehicles of the same make, just a few months older. How is that ethical" any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Recently I have noticed that when I fill up my 2005 Dodge Durango with gas, that when it is full and the pump stops, gas comes gushing out of the tank. I have asked Dodge if there is a recall because that is what I heard and they told me no. I did find the recall info on this web site and I want to know if my VIN is covered. I have two small children and I want this fixed before something serious happens. Please let me know what is going on...
I have a 2005 Dodge Durango and have the problem with fuel splashing out when I fill the tank. There is a current recall on similar vehicles, yet the Dodge.com website says my VIN is not included. This situation is very worrisome. I appreciate your help. Thanks!
Dodge Durango 2005, recently has begun to blow gas out of the tank after filling. Every time I fill the tank a large amount of gasoline explodes from the tank and constitutes a nuisance and a serious hazard due to the gas spill.
The filler tube inlet check valve not fully close and allows fuel to escape from the vehicle filler neck. There is a recall on this but when I call they said my VIN number was not covered for this recall. NHTSA campaign number: 05V034000. This has been happening since the beginning of December everytime I fill my tank.
When filling up my 2005 Dodge Durango, the pump will automatically shut off when full and then gas squirts/shoots out of the fill tube. This has been happening since October 2008, I checked for recalls on the Chrysler website and it stated that there are no recalls for my vehicle. Although I did find a recall for my vehicle under this recall vins ending 5F500001 to 5F535219, my VIN is 5F503046 which clearly falls in that range. After searching the internet and finding so many other complaints I felt as though I should file a complaint. I am going to call the dealership to see if they are willing to fix the problem under the recall.
The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. Whenever the contact fills the fuel tank, gasoline sprays out of the tank. The fuel nozzle stops when the tank is full, but gasoline continues to spray out of the tank. Through research, the contact discovered NHTSA campaign id number 05V034000 (fuel system, gasoline'storage;tank assembly;filler pipe and cap). The VIN was not included in the recall, although the failures were identical. The failure mileage was 36,000 and current mileage was 52,000.
While filling up the fuel tank (every time), fuel pours (shoots) out through the filler neck once the tank is filled. Fuel either rushes out and down the outside of the vehicle or it squirts out dangerously with a significant amount of force. Researching this problem, I have found an official recall from Dodge for 2005 Durangos, but calls to Dodge and inquiries on their website indicate that my particular vehicle is not covered. This is a dangerous situation that could easily lead to fire, etc. As you can imagine, I am reluctant to fill up my vehicle while my children are in the car due to the increased risk of spilled gasoline on the car, sidewalk and sometimes all the way to the pump itself. I have read that you were able to help others with this ongoing problem and I am asking for your help in this matter and sincerely appreciate your consideration. This is my second submission as I have not heard back from you when I initially submitted this complaint.
Fuel spit back when filling gas tank. Just started within the week. It happened the last two times I filled my tank. I assume it has a bad roll over valve or fill limit vent valve. I called the dealer and he thought it was the roll over valve and would be approx. $250 to fix. 2005 Dodge Durango w/hemi - 48,539 miles.
The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. Whenever the contact fills the fuel tank, gasoline sprays out of the tank. The fuel nozzle stops when the tank is full, but fuel still sprays out of the tank. The vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer for inspection. The technician discovered NHTSA campaign id number 05V034000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage;tank assembly;filler pipe and cap); however, the VIN was not included although the failures were identical. The failure and current mileages were 65,000. Updated 01/09/09. Updated 01/09/09
